There, that was the Scrooge she knew - negotiation, not pity, and she'd expect nothing less.

Which made this part all the worse, because what did you offer the world's richest man?

"The sight of my humiliation and degradation." To wit -

She fell to her knees and clasped her hands together. "PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEAAAAASE!"

This was one of those moments where he was glad for the security cameras in his office: This was a sight he'd be able to re-watch over and over for his own amusement for ages to come. Which gave him additional incentive to take his time on his answer for maximum blackmail material.

"Fine, but there will be rules to how this works. If you break them, the deal's off and you can enjoy your upcoming nuptials with your intended," he told her with a smirk.

Magica had been ready to kick and scream and cry and beg, so she was almost glad he was agreeing - though a part of her was amazed he was agreeing. She glanced up, and almost shuddered - did he have to look so happy about this?

"... What sort of rules?"

If only he'd known, he would've held out a little longer.

"Depends on how we're supposed to keep up appearances, but the most important rule is this one: For as long as we're 'engaged', you give up all attempts at stealing my Dime," he told her sharply.

"I anticipated that."

She got back up on her feet and brushed down her dress, as if she hadn't been pleading moments before. "You wouldn't simply believe me if I said yes. So I made my own magical contract, so I wouldn't fall prey to my own greed."

She whipped out the paper she'd been glowering at in the elevator. "I already signed it, just needs your signature. If I try to take your dime during our 'marriage', I lose my magic."

"Let me see that," he ordered, reaching out for the document. He had plenty of practice reading contracts, and he was going to take his time reading this one to ensure she hadn't given herself any loopholes.

She expected no less from him, and as a result she'd made sure everything was defined as tightly and neatly as possible.

No stealing the dime.
No making anyone else steal the dime.
No tricking people into stealing the dime.
No lying about the dime's whereabouts.
No using hostages in exchange for the dime.

And so on and so forth - she'd had enough years of doing this to know what was to be expected. It seemed that, for once, Magica was very serious about this.

He read over each line carefully. Good. Very good. Still...

"As an addendum," he began, "I want the same protections extended to my family. No hexes or tricking others into harming them, etc."

Damn.

"I always forget the 'add-ons'." She meant as his family. Familial affection was still foreign to her, and she never understood Scrooge's bonds. "Fine, fine..." She popped out a quill from her purse, and headed to his desk, scribbling onto the contract.

"There, satisfied?"

Scrooge read over what she added, verifying that--once again--the loopholes would be closed. Good. His Dime and family were both safe.

"Satisfied." He held out his hand for the quill, assuming he had to use that one to seal the deal.

She handed it over and exhaled with relief. This hadn't gone exactly the way she wanted, but it was still a success. Surely Granny, that wretched old biddy, would be easily convinced. This would take, what, a few weeks? A month?

Surely a fellow De Spell wouldn't be petty enough to carry it out any longer than that.

"You... have my thanks."

He sighed his name swiftly on the end of the contract, used to doing that several times a day for various paperwork. "I need a copy of this, but you're welcome. So, how are we supposed to convince your family that we're engaged? I don't exactly want to make some grand announcement. It would raise up too many red flags given who I am: Everyone knows I'd rather marry quietly than make a spectacle of it."

It was a magical contract, after all - after he finished signing it, it glowed brightly, the letters illuminated, and then it merely "popped" - one copy, one original. Magical objects always had to have an extra bit of drama.

"Well, the first thought I had," which should be a warning in of itself, "Was inviting them to a small wedding inside your mansion. Where I'll be living until Granny accepts the marriage."

No issues, right?

He frowned but he couldn't object to it. He had signed the contract after all. He just didn't like the idea that she'd be living in his mansion and inside the wards and protective spells designed to keep magical foes out.

"That sounds reasonable. So do we go through with the ceremony or stage a 'break up' once your grandmother accepts that we were intending to get married?" He tapped his fingers on his desk. "If we go through with the ceremony, we could get an annulment once she's satisfied we've tied the knot but it's a bit messy legally."

"Oh, who cares about mess?" She waved a dismissive hand. "It's not like you and I ever plan to marry anyone else for real. Once Granny accepts it and the contract is fulfilled, we annul as quickly as possible and I go back to stealing what should be mine."

Scrooge's beak curled slightly with distaste. "Stop saying things like that. It'll only make it harder for me to fake actually being attracted to you."

A roll of her eyes. "Fine, how do you expect me to act?" She then fluttered her eyelashes, hands together. "Oooh, Scroogie-woogie, you're just the best, lammiekins!"

He gagged. "That's even worse!" He scowled. "No talk about how you're attempting to cheat your way into wealth from either side. We keep it civil."

She straightened up, back to normal. "I suppose we can manage that, at the very least."

"Good. So when do we send out the invitations for the wedding?" he asked dryly. "And I'll need to tell my family what's going on to keep up the illusion."

The last thing this arrangement needed was the boys and Webby constantly flooding Magica with garlic.

Magica wanted this done with as soon as possible, so she thought she came up with the best solution.

"I can have Ratface fly out invites right away, and we can marry tonight."

He shook his head. "I need to talk to my family first so they don't try to break things up. Do you want your grandmother convinced or not?"

He tapped his foot in thought. "Let's set the date for the end of the week. Gives us time to make sure everyone gets their invites and for my family to get the story straight."

Ugh, him and his family.

"Fine," she grumbled, crossing her arms and tapping her foot. "It's just for three people anyway. Granny, Rosolio, and Minima." She had few friends in the magical realm, and if she could help it, she didn't want them finding about this.

"All right," he told her. "Once the workday's over, I'll go talk to my family about this."

She dropped her broom, and it automatically began to float. She sat sidesaddle, yanking her original version of the contract.

"Guess that means I'm off to grab what I need from home... and break some hearts." A snort.
