"Okay... so ask. What do you need to know about them?"

"First off, is there anyone else who might come out of the woodwork?" he asked, grimacing. "The more people, the more complicated this is going to get."

She shook her head. "No, this is it. Everyone else is either dead, or hate my guts." To be honest, she had no idea why Granny and the others showered her with love and praise.

"Charming. Second, what room were you planning to put Granny in? I thought you'd want them relatively close by you."

"It'd be preferable not to be close to anyone. When she snores, she accidentally releases bursts of uncontrollable magic. That's why I need to put a spell on the door to protect us all."

"...Would the end of the hall do?" he asked, grimacing. He'd rather not have the entire house come down.

He was also very glad that the guest wing and the family wing were quite far from one another.

A quick nod. "That'll work. And keep anything feathery away from Rosolio. He's allergic to Ratface most of all - and when he sneezes, he lets out dragon-fire."

Scrooge groaned, rubbing his temples. "What about Minima and Adelia? Any accidental destructive triggers I should know about?"

Thankfully she shook her head. "No, Minima will probably become a great sorceress when she comes of age... she's just... well, a child. So she doesn't think of consequences. And Adelia is also in control of her magic... a true waste of potential." A fairy, why would you???

"Barely a brain in any of them, though. That's why they don't suspect a thing."

"I don't know if I should be grateful considering they likely wouldn't cause too much trouble in general or pity," Scrooge said dryly.

"Stick to grateful." Magica never understood pity, nor did she care for it. "Just keep them distracted, and this will be over before we know it."

Scrooge nodded. Once the ceremony was over, Magica's grandmother would accept the marriage...right?

Some part of him had a sneaking suspicion that things were going along too smoothly, that there was another shoe waiting to drop.

It was time for lunch, and both families gathered together. Minima was getting along with the other children, more or less, and Rosolio slumped into his seat, with a handful of flowers that he continued to play "she loves me, she loves me not" with.

Granny was the last to arrive, and within seconds was bringing hell. "Who wants to see Magica's baby pictures?"

Magica fell out of her seat. "NOBODY!"

Scrooge opened his mouth to answer that he was interested but paused at the sight of Rosolio, eyes locked on the flowers.

"Where did you get those peonies from?" he asked, a feeling of dread rising within him.

"From the garden, of course." Rosolio replied without looking up. "She loves me..."

"She loves you not." Magica hissed, getting back into her seat.

"Was it the part with the stone bench with carved scrollwork?" Scrooge asked, his unease mounting.

"It was such a lovely bench!" Granny said cheerfully, finally sitting down.

Magica eyed Scrooge. Asking why that was such a big deal might reveal a hole in the plan, but she was curious.

"Oh no," Scrooge moaned, covering his face with one hand. He held up three fingers on his free hand, counting down as he spoke the numbers aloud. "Three...two...one..."

"MY PEONIES!" came the enraged shout of Beakley from the garden.

He peeked through his fingers at Rosolio. "Please tell me you only mangled one."

"Actually, that's the only one left." Granny replied, still stupidly cheerful. "Poor Rosolio's allergies acted up, and, well, you know his fire-sneezes..."

Magica began to wonder if Beakly murdering her relatives would violate or help the contract.

"You what?!" Scrooge yelped just seconds before he ran to cut off his former spy partner from going for one of the multitude of weapons kept around the house.

"Aw, now now, he is sorry about it." Granny glanced over. "Aren't you, dearie?"

"A-huh." He wasn't really paying attention, still plucking petals. "She loves me..."

Scrooge met Beakley halfway between Rosolio and where the Deus Excalibur was hanging on the wall. "Now, Twenty-Two, just calm down--"

"Those were my peonies!" she growled, hand on the hilt.

"I know! And I'll get you what you need to grow a new patch! Just...in a couple of days he'll be far, far away from your flowers."

Beakley glared hotly but relinquished her grip on the sword. "He might end up having stomach issues due to his 'allergies'."

"And as long as they don't cause him to blow up the house, you're free to doctor his meals."

"She loves me not," said Rosolio, still clearly not paying attention.

Granny waved cheerfully to Beakley. "Oh, a housekeeper, so fancy! Here I thought maids wore those cute black dresses and aprons."

The children shuddered at that mental image.
