"You're ever so welcome!" Adelia sang. "Oh, the big day is almost here! I can't waiiit~!" She began to frolic off.

Magica whipped her head to glare at Scrooge. "Why did you let her ramble on?! It nearly ended in a blessing! I warned you!"

"I couldn't resist. Your face was too entertaining." He smirked. "And you said that I'd be paid with your embarrassment. I wanted my money's worth.

"Besides, it proved enlightening."

"You and I both know she was exaggerating!"

Scrooge sipped at his soup at that small relief. Nothing had been set on fire today. Nobody had been bespelled into anything.

Magica was feeling equally unnerved. The kids were getting along, Granny had gotten her hair color back to normal, and Rosolio - while still moaning and groaning about losing Magica - hadn't caused any major damage to something Beakly owned. Adelia was sharing the occasional "Magica as a little kid" story, but even they weren't desperately embarrassing. Everything was fine.

Which, as a result, made Magica so anxious she couldn't eat.

Scrooge was trying to focus on the stories but unable to do so. Instead, he ate his food mechanically and sat quietly.

Where was that other shoe? Where was it?!

Eventually she couldn't take the stress anymore, and stood up, rattling the table a bit. "I'm... going to bed early."

Granny blinked. "Dearie, you've hardly touched your food!"

"I'm... not hungry."

Scrooge got up as well. "I'll walk her to her room. Please excuse us."

After all, he needed to work out his own nerves. Walking Magica was a perfect excuse.

"Awww!" Adelia and Granny cooed together, ignoring all the eyerolling from others.

Magica walked with Scrooge, waiting until they were alone. "... For once, I have nothing to apologize for." And that was weird!

"Neither do I," Scrooge said. "I just keep wondering what's going to go wrong between now and tomorrow."

She glanced over at him. "Is it possible that... nothing will go wrong? That this will finally go off without a hitch?"

"There's a possibility, but this is us we're talking about."

Magica cupped her chin, trying to think of all the possibilities. "All of my close family is here... and all my real friends would be smart enough to know this is a farce, so they'd stay away... So there's no chance of any surprises visits from my side."

"My close family are all in the know and are going along with this but other than that I can't think of anyone who might interfere on my side." Scrooge rubbed his temples. "Yet I feel like somewhere we overlooked something or someone."

Magica counted on her fingers to keep track of both sides.

"My Granny, your sisters... my niece, your nephews... Rosolio..." She stopped, and snorted. "Well, you don't have an obsessive idiot who thinks you're already in a relationship."

There it was. There was the one he'd missed by virtue of trying to pretend the woman didn't exist.

"... Uh-oh."

Oops. Well. Hm. That... could be a problem.

"... Is it possible she might not know? It's not like we tried to spread this outside of the mansion."

"Possible. I think." He shivered. "Or at least I'd like to believe she has a job outside of stalking me."

"Then all we have to do is make sure she doesn't find out! The charade's only going to be for a day or two more!"

They were so close to the finish line!

"Well, I'm not going to broadcast it to the rest of the world," Scrooge said with a snort.

"Of course not - but is there any way you can keep her busy?"

"The only thing I can think of is her actually paying attention to her business." His eye twitched. "When she actually applies herself to it, she's actually competent."

"So in other words, the only thing we can do about her is cross our fingers and pray?" That didn't exactly instill confidence.
