The children were dressed - forcibly so, by Adelia, in embarrassing fluffy dresses and suits - and the last preparations were being made. Granny was with Scrooge, dabbing a handkerchief to her cheek even though no tears had yet to flow.

"To think, before the sun sets, my little granddaughter will be a wife." Sniffle sniffle. "And to be honest... I had my doubts about you."

"Oh?" That was a surprise. Many people would've considered Scrooge quite a catch. "And why's that?"

"Well, you have been at each other's throats for some time now." She glanced at him out of the corner of her eye. "It seemed rather suspicious that after all this time, after all her insults and attempts at the dime, you suddenly propose."

"... But when I heard about the red dress, all my doubts cleared up."

Scrooge awkwardly chuckled. "Well, things can always change. Though why did the dress convince you?"

"Because you had it made for her!" She answered with a happy sigh, hand to her chest. "Oh, we of the magic, we can make outfits with a snap of our fingers. Disguises are among the first spells we learn. So to make a gift, to spend money and material and time... that tells any witch and warlock how you really feel!"

It also might have explained Magica's... reaction.

That record scratch she just heard? That was Scrooge's brain as his thoughts ground to a sudden halt.

"Oh...Magica never told me."

A divorce wasn't going to be necessary.

Granny raised her eyebrows, confused, but easily settled back into cheerfulness. "Maybe she just assumed you knew, since you two seem to know each other so well! I know you're going to take excellent care of my granddaughter now, since you made such a clear display of your feelings for her. Why else make that dress?"

So, to sum up - he had (accidentally) played with her emotions, and then (on purpose) played with her body.

'Til death due them part may be a lot shorter than any of them figured.

"That must be it."

When they were alone tonight, he was going to demand why she hadn't said a blasted thing about the "making her things" part. As if he knew about the courting rituals of witches and warlocks!

Granny clapped her hands. "Well, I think everyone will have been dressed right about now. We're seconds away from the ceremony!" She slapped his shoulders. "Let's get you in place so you can see your blushing bride and speak your vows!"

Oh dear gods, this entire scenario was becoming even more of a nightmare.

He followed Granny's lead to his spot and waited awkwardly. Well, this was it. Definitely not how he would've predicted he'd find himself at the altar.

Now the "entire" family was there, most of them reluctant to be here just as much as Scrooge.

The organ music began to play - wait, where did a self-playing organ come from?! Adelia of course!

Eventually, in came Magica - who was using every ounce of strength to look neutral instead of wishing for his death. Her hair had been tied up in a braid, with violet flowers twisted in.

Scrooge had to admit: Magica did make for a lovely bride. Though he would've felt red flowers would've been better to go with the red of the dress.

He watched her walk towards him, being careful to keep a calm expression on his own face. Let the witch side think what they would.

Magica came to his side, managing to keep up the act. Just a few sentences, and this would be over...

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today..."

Rosolio began bawling. Granny silently reached over to shut his beak.

Scrooge more or less tuned out most of the ceremony, too focused on keeping up the charade of being the dutiful bridegroom. Just a little more...a little more...

"Do you, Scrooge, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

"I do."

"Do you, Magica, take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

"I do."

So close! Magica looked around for any sign of Brigitta or anyone else to interrupt or stop the ceremony. They were really going to finish it!

Scrooge tuned out again, glad for over a hundred years of life teaching him how to space out without looking like he wasn't paying attention. Instead, he wondered what Beakley was making for dinner and how long he'd be sleeping on the floor until this farce was officially over.

"--kiss the bride!"

And that was the part he'd been dreading more than someone interrupting.

And boy oh boy, it really felt like everyone was really leaning in now, huh?

Magica turned to face Scrooge, her expression calm but eyes full of dread. She wasn't anticipating this either, but... she closed her eyes. It was the duty of the groom to start things off, wasn't it?

He placed on hand on her hip and the other behind her bed, combing his fingers through her hair. This was different than the night before when he'd been teasing her, trying to get her body to desire his.

Despite the callouses lingering beneath his feathers, his touch was soft and gentle as he cupped he brought them together for the kiss. And it wasn't a stage kiss by any stretch of the imagination: Nothing blocked his beak from hers and this wasn't a quick peck. He took his time with it.

The thing is, Magica had been expecting a quick peck. Something to get over with so they could finish everything else up - after all, he probably thought kissing her was disgusting.

Sooo - what was with this?

She twitched, trying not to show any sign of surprise. It was soft and sweet and tender, nothing like the man she knew. Worst of all, it felt good. Her joints began to loosen, muscles began to relax, face began to melt.

Webby cocked her head, mumbling to her friends. "Are... they going to come up for air anytime soon?"

Scrooge held it for another few seconds before pulling away from her, ignoring the officiate's proclamation that they were now Mr. and Mrs. McDuck. There. If that didn't convince her family, nothing would.

...Even if some small part of him had found this pleasant.

Applause! Cheering! Music! Adelia was using her magic to create a full-blown party, whether anyone wanted it or not.

Magica felt dizzy, having forgotten what they were doing for a moment. When she managed to collect herself, she turned away, cheeks red.

Scrooge politely accepted the congratulations thrown their way, ignoring the quizzical looks from the children. He'd had to make it look good.

Right. That was all.

Though his patience for Adelia was definitely wearing thin. He might have bared his teeth a little at her as he told her, "A first dance isn't necessary. To be honest, I could use a bit of a sit down."

"Oh, don't be silly!" Adelia squealed. "A first dance is a symbol of your everlasting-"

Magica threw the bouquet at Adelia's face, walking past her. "Don't give her a chance to talk. Just sit."

Scrooge gave a snort before following her, finally taking a seat in a chair and rubbing at his bad leg. The blasted thing chose the worst times to start twinging.

"So that's that," he murmured just loud enough for Magica to hear.

"That's that." She repeated, not looking at him and sitting across from him. "Once the party ends, we spend the night, and they all leave in a day or two."

But the most important hurdle had been crossed with no problem. Everything from here on out would be easy. Supposedly.
