Though his patience for Adelia was definitely wearing thin. He might have bared his teeth a little at her as he told her, "A first dance isn't necessary. To be honest, I could use a bit of a sit down."

"Oh, don't be silly!" Adelia squealed. "A first dance is a symbol of your everlasting-"

Magica threw the bouquet at Adelia's face, walking past her. "Don't give her a chance to talk. Just sit."

Scrooge gave a snort before following her, finally taking a seat in a chair and rubbing at his bad leg. The blasted thing chose the worst times to start twinging.

"So that's that," he murmured just loud enough for Magica to hear.

"That's that." She repeated, not looking at him and sitting across from him. "Once the party ends, we spend the night, and they all leave in a day or two."

But the most important hurdle had been crossed with no problem. Everything from here on out would be easy. Supposedly.

"Good. Your family is driving me crazy."

"You're telling me. My next spell project may be improving the dimensional prison I tried trapping them in before."

"Maybe you could take a few notes from the spell prison I locked the Bombie in."

"Maybe we can put them both together so they can destroy each other."

"Do you think that would work?"

She sighed dreamily, leaning back n her seat. "Wouldn't it be great if it did?"

"It'd certainly save me a mint," Scrooge muttered.

"No more teaching lessons to a brat who won't listen," she mused.

"No more Granny deciding my life for me... No more Adelia thinking she knows me better than I know myself... No more Rosolio trying to kiss me under mistletoe even when it's not Christmas..."

Scrooge gave her a surprised look. "I'd wondered why you were so desperate for this wedding."

"Of course you wouldn't get it." She huffed, hand on her cheek. "Look at your family! They actually... love and support you, or something."

"They don't try to force you to do anything or be someone you can't. Your kids listen to you, mostly. You've got a whole system of... unconditional care, or something stupid like that."

Scrooge sighed. "That's not...quite true. But I'd rather not discuss that out in the open where anyone and their brother can hear us."

He was a private man, and they were already risking a lot even distantly discussing their deal.

"Whatever." She looked out at the party, as the kids were trying to ditch their frilly outfits so they could dance and play together.

With a sigh, she reached back to undo her hair.

"You should leave it up. It looks nice."

He didn't mean to say what he'd been thinking aloud yet there it was. The best he could do was to try and seem like it had been nothing more than an idle comment: barely glancing at her or her reaction.

She stopped, startled, and looked over. He wasn't looking at her, so maybe he was just saying it to keep up the act... Then again, everyone seemed so thoroughly distracted, would they have even heard the compliment?

Her cheeks pinked, but she pulled out one flower to keep her fingers busy. Her hair stayed up.

Scrooge wasn't entirely sure why he'd said it, and he definitely didn't know why she'd followed his suggestion. To keep up pretense? Maybe.

The party seemed to stretch on forever, with Beakly and Duckworth swapping in meals and snacks when they ran out.

Finally, Magica got up and stretched. "What time is it?"
