"If you're going to be..." He paused, seeing that Minima was watching them. "...my wife, there's something you have to understand: inflation. If I wanted to crack open my Money Bin tomorrow and spend every last gold piece inside, what do you think will happen?"

Magica followed Scrooge's line of sight and jerked - how long had that devious imp been listening in?!

"Don't mind me," she chirped, the devil in her eyes.

Rotten little - if she hesitated for too long, the rest of the families were going to notice. "Lower our mutual stress?"

"Temporarily, maybe, but it'd be flooding the market with gold."

He thought for a moment.

"What's a rare component in potions?" He paused. "Dear?"

"Pegasus hair." Minima answered.

"Nobody asked you, brat."

"It's still true, though. Right next to Ogre eyes."

"Let's go with ogre eyes," Scrooge said. "Can't get as many off of an ogre as you can pegasus hair and pegasi can periodically be found in herds. So ogre eyes are rare and can't be duplicated easily. Makes them a good base for currency."

He held up a finger.

"Money - paper money in particular - is just paper. The only reason it has value is because everyone involved in trading for goods and services comes to an agreement on more or less what it's worth. It's a promise: 'This piece of paper is worth this amount of currency if you needed to trade for the real stuff'. Given its rarity, let's say that one ogre eye is worth one thousand pieces of specially-printed paper which are Witch Dollars. Following so far?"

"Already regretting bringing this up, but yes." Magica said, resting her cheek in her hand.

"Now then. Suppose someone managed to find a way to quadruple the supply of ogre eyes. With their rarity going down, their value goes down. Suddenly, an ogre eye is worth only two hundred and fifty Witch Dollars, not one thousand. Any potions you sell with ogre eyes in them will also be worth less by extension, meaning you'd need to sell more to make up for the loss to be able to pay for things you need."

Scrooge toyed with his knife.

"This creates a domino effect. Someone who needed one of your ogre eye potions to make a luxury product suddenly has a glut of potions because you're making more potions to make up for your financial loss. He makes more of his stock to use up those potions which drives down his own prices because he's got more to sell so people are less willing to pay a premium price for something more readily available. Onward down the line it goes. This is inflation.

"Under normal circumstances, the market can re-balance itself to adjust for that inflation. Luxury items drop in price as they become more readily available because people have figured out how to make them cheaper so that more product can be put up for sale which also affects the market. This is healthy to a certain extent.

"But there's a caveat: the production of luxury goods might increase and lower their prices but food production might not be able to keep up. That loaf of bread you bought for two Witch Dollars last week? Well, now it's jumped to eight."

Magica regretted bringing this up so much. On the plus side, Minima had gotten so bored she started a pea-flinging contest with the boys.

"How long is the lecture?" It made sense, as much as she was loathe to admit it - which is why she wasn't going to admit it.

"Almost done, I promise," he told her with a smirk.

The best part was that as his wife, she'd have to know at least the bare bones of all this.

He put his knife down and said casually, "Imagine someone had an amulet that could create ogre eyes out of whatever they liked at any time they felt like it. What do you think happens to the Witch Dollar?"

"It becomes less than nil, " She muttered, fingers tapping on the table.

"Exactly. And suddenly the entire financial system collapses. Luxury items sit around collecting dust because you need backpacks full of money for the chance to buy a single loaf of bread. Assuming the person baking it is even able to or will accept those little pieces of paper."

And that was why the Midas Touch was truly dangerous.

"Mmm-hmm... there's just one itty bitty problem with this whole thing."

"And that is?"

She swept her hand under her beak, gesturing to herself. "You assume I have basic empathy for anyone but myself."

"You have to have it on some level. Why else would I marry you?" he said, trying to hide his irritation. "Or at least have enough sense to recognize that unless you know how to grow and make your own food while defending everything you worked for from other people who are desperate for food, you'd starve, too."

He did remember they weren't actually getting married, right? "Take it down a few notches, unless you want Granny hearing you yelling at your fiance!"

Oh he remembered, but he didn't trust that Minima wasn't listening.

Instead he smiled, reaching out to take her hand and kiss her knuckles. "Of course. My apologies, my Black Pearl."

Magica flinched, startled by that sudden affection and nickname again. Her cheeks flushed, and she looked away. "Can't you just find an even balance?"

"Old habits have a tendency to die hard," he told her. "I've been a bachelor my whole life. Can't expect me to have the right balance right away, can you?"

And if anything, his action had earned a sniffling coo from Granny De Spell. If they were gonna go through with this, they had to show some affection.

Magica began to wonder if a good noose would have been the better option. She huffed quietly, but squeezed his hand while resisting the urge to roll her eyes.

He gave her hand a squeeze before letting it go. Ugh. He was going to take the longest bath ever after this mess was finished.

Finally, dinner ended and everyone left the dining room. Scrooge took a moment to sigh with relief, rubbing the space between his eyes.

"Another day down," she reminded him as she got up, ready to retreat to her room. "We're almost there."

"Aye." He stretched one arm above his head, grimacing at the pop in his back. "Just a little farther now."

"It'll be over before you know it." She turned to go. "Get a dress fitting, a ring fitting, one day of a stupid ceremony, and done."

He nodded his head. "When you put it like that, it doesn't sound like much."
