"No!" Magica protested. "No no no!"

This was drowned out by the children, Minima included, saying "Yes yes yes!"

With a wave of her arm, Granny pulled out a thick photobook and slammed it on the table. "Here we are... this was her hatching day! She even came out with a scowl!"

"Somehow I'm not surprised," Scrooge said, casting a smirk in Magica's direction.

Magica glared, longing for the days where she could give him a finger as a reply.

"And here she is with her first wand," Granny said, flipping the page. "She looks just like you, Minima!"

"Except for the big frownie face." Minima said with a grin.

Oh, her clear frustration was delicious...

Clearly, Magica hadn't thought the full consequences of this deal through. Her not being able to do a thing without calling the engagement into question was wonderful enough, but her not being able to pursue the Dime or hurt his family was the icing on the cake.

Granny kept flipping through the photos, each page like a dagger into Magica's pride. All she could do was thud her head to the table.

"Here she is at Christmas, what a big lump of coal she got that year." Thud.
"First day at witch-school, she made so many friends, and almost none of them died!" Thud.
"The first time she crashed her broom, I kept the splinters!" Thud.

Oh, Magica. Did you really think that Scrooge wouldn't take the opportunity to have you humiliated at every turn? That's what you promised him as payment after all!

Though, good gravy, "almost none of them died"?

"She's gotten much better at flying, I noticed," Scrooge said impishly, wishing him pulling out his phone to take snapshots wouldn't be too odd.

Fortunately, Louie solved that problem for him. That kid was fast with a smartphone.

Magica shot a glare at Louie. "In the future, remember to sleep with one eye open."

Granny lifted her head. "What was that, dear?"

"Nothing, Granny."

"Okay!" Granny made it to the last page. "And here she is a few years ago...such a gorgeous red dress! It's such a shame you wear all black, red is such a beautiful color on you!"

Scrooge somehow managed not to blink in shock at the sight though his eyes did widen slightly.

She looked annoyed in the picture (when didn't she in these pictures?) but she actually looked...different...in red. He was so used to seeing her in black (outside of her disguises) that his brain had always linked "Magica De Spell" to "witch" and "threat". He knew she was a woman but she might as well have been genderless in his head.

But in that red dress, she looked like what she was beneath the spells and cackling and more ham than a pig farmer: an attractive young woman.

"I didn't even know you had dresses in other colors," Scrooge said, trying to cover his lapse.

Magica raised an eyebrow - she could have sworn she saw Scrooge's expression change for a moment...? Nah, it must have been her imagination. She huffed, looking away. "It was my birthday, and everyone was making such a big fuss about a new dress my friend Roberta got me, so I wore it to shut them up. Haven't worn it since."

So she claimed - but the longer one looked at the picture, the more it revealed. There was a faint pinkess to her cheeks, a rose in her hair.

"A shame," he said honestly.

He could see the faint blush and the rose in the photograph. She'd liked the dress but for whatever reason she wasn't able to admit it. Why?

Magica looked over, surprised. Did she hear right?

"What was that?"

Well, she'd likely heard. Might as well double down. If anything, it would sound like he was just playing the part.

"I said it's a shame."

Magica flinched, and almost on instinct deflected - but managed to catch herself. Had to play the role, remember? "Ah... um... thank you."

"Awwww!" Granny cooed once more, slipping the photo out of the page and offering it to Scrooge. "Here, you can keep it!"

He took it. "Thank you. I'll treasure it."

That part was playing the role, but he was definitely curious about the Magica in the picture. Him having possession of it would give him time to ponder her.

"You're welcome! I have a million copies of these at home. I learned my lesson after Magica kept trying to burn them."

Just like that, Magica went back to spiteful and grouchy. "Sounds more like blackmail than fond memories."

"Oh, I don't know. In this case, I'd say it's a fond memory," Scrooge told her, lightly teasing her.

"Maybe it's both." She huffed right back.

The meal was ending, and Magica longed to return to her room - though she doubted, with her family here, how much privacy she'd get.

Scrooge worked to steer the conversation away from anything that might rile her up more. The last thing they needed was for her to blow her top and blow the lid off of their little con.

They survived dessert at least, and Scrooge rose from his seat.

"Your rooms should be ready," he told the warlock and newly-arrived witches. "Granny, you'll be at the end of the hallway from Magica's room. Minima will be right across the hall from you and Rosolio the room next to Minima's. I hope you find them comfortable."

"Our own rooms, ever so fancy!" Granny giggled as if she was a hundred years younger. "And all so close to one another! This mansion is ever so roomy!"

"I hope you have fire insurance." Minima chirped. "And smoke insurance. And water insurance. And-"

"I'll be enchanting Granny's door so her snores don't affect the mansion." Magica cut her off. "I better get a start on that now." No better way to escape their madness, even if only temporarily.

"Don't forget to fireproof Rosolio's room, too, my pearl," he said, somehow managing not to laugh at his usage of the fake pet name.

Magica's entire face reddened, having all but forgotten that moniker. "I... um... r-right. Thank you... darling." She could just die! But instead she sprinted out of the room, wanting to hide her face.

"Isn't she just adorable?" Granny sighed.

Scrooge nodded his head, swallowing the cackling that threatened to escape. Once Magica looked up the magical meaning of a black pearl, she'd probably smack him for it, but he hadn't been able to resist.

Magica managed to spell Granny, Rosolio, and just in case, Minima's doors. It was a bit exhausting, and when she was finished, she returned to her room to rest.

... After a moment of curiosity, she grabbed a tome about stones, and flipped through. Pearls, pearls, pearls...

"... HEY!"

Black pearls were used in magic rituals to promote good fortune in business. Scrooge might not be capable of wielding magic, but he certainly wasn't ignorant.

Smart-ass. If he was going to keep this up during the next couple of days, this marriage was going to be a real strain.

Still... She'd manage. She wasn't going to sacrifice her freedom for anything. Maybe Scrooge only saw it as a joke, but even if she failed for the rest of her life, it would be her choice. So if she had to sacrifice every scrap of dignity and pride she had... it would be a price she'd gladly pay.

Nobody owned Magica De Spell.
