Magica flinched, and almost on instinct deflected - but managed to catch herself. Had to play the role, remember? "Ah... um... thank you."

"Awwww!" Granny cooed once more, slipping the photo out of the page and offering it to Scrooge. "Here, you can keep it!"

He took it. "Thank you. I'll treasure it."

That part was playing the role, but he was definitely curious about the Magica in the picture. Him having possession of it would give him time to ponder her.

"You're welcome! I have a million copies of these at home. I learned my lesson after Magica kept trying to burn them."

Just like that, Magica went back to spiteful and grouchy. "Sounds more like blackmail than fond memories."

"Oh, I don't know. In this case, I'd say it's a fond memory," Scrooge told her, lightly teasing her.

"Maybe it's both." She huffed right back.

The meal was ending, and Magica longed to return to her room - though she doubted, with her family here, how much privacy she'd get.

Scrooge worked to steer the conversation away from anything that might rile her up more. The last thing they needed was for her to blow her top and blow the lid off of their little con.

They survived dessert at least, and Scrooge rose from his seat.

"Your rooms should be ready," he told the warlock and newly-arrived witches. "Granny, you'll be at the end of the hallway from Magica's room. Minima will be right across the hall from you and Rosolio the room next to Minima's. I hope you find them comfortable."

"Our own rooms, ever so fancy!" Granny giggled as if she was a hundred years younger. "And all so close to one another! This mansion is ever so roomy!"

"I hope you have fire insurance." Minima chirped. "And smoke insurance. And water insurance. And-"

"I'll be enchanting Granny's door so her snores don't affect the mansion." Magica cut her off. "I better get a start on that now." No better way to escape their madness, even if only temporarily.

"Don't forget to fireproof Rosolio's room, too, my pearl," he said, somehow managing not to laugh at his usage of the fake pet name.

Magica's entire face reddened, having all but forgotten that moniker. "I... um... r-right. Thank you... darling." She could just die! But instead she sprinted out of the room, wanting to hide her face.

"Isn't she just adorable?" Granny sighed.

Scrooge nodded his head, swallowing the cackling that threatened to escape. Once Magica looked up the magical meaning of a black pearl, she'd probably smack him for it, but he hadn't been able to resist.

Magica managed to spell Granny, Rosolio, and just in case, Minima's doors. It was a bit exhausting, and when she was finished, she returned to her room to rest.

... After a moment of curiosity, she grabbed a tome about stones, and flipped through. Pearls, pearls, pearls...

"... HEY!"

Black pearls were used in magic rituals to promote good fortune in business. Scrooge might not be capable of wielding magic, but he certainly wasn't ignorant.

Smart-ass. If he was going to keep this up during the next couple of days, this marriage was going to be a real strain.

Still... She'd manage. She wasn't going to sacrifice her freedom for anything. Maybe Scrooge only saw it as a joke, but even if she failed for the rest of her life, it would be her choice. So if she had to sacrifice every scrap of dignity and pride she had... it would be a price she'd gladly pay.

Nobody owned Magica De Spell.

Scrooge pitied the man who thought he could own her, to be honest.

He himself was doing his nightly walk-through of the house, planning to go down to the Other Bin to make sure everything was secure down there as well. He always liked this part of his nightly routine. It was always just a nice way to calm his mind before bed.

Not that he'd done much of this during those ten years, but details.

All was quiet, for the most part. Granny's snoring was audible, but thankfully doing no damage.

Magica's door was cracked open a smidgen. She was having trouble sleeping, so she decided to occupy her time with brewing. Going through the motions would tire her out eventually.

At the moment she was using a long wooden spoon to slowly stir the contents of the cauldron which illuminated her in a forest green light.

Scrooge was passing by on his walk when he saw the green light coming from Magica's bedroom. On a whim, he rapped on the door frame so that he didn't accidentally open the door more and startle her.

Magica glanced over, and was relieved to see it was only Scrooge.

"You can come in." Ratface was fast asleep, tucked in his own miniature bed.

Scrooge walked into the room, shutting the door behind himself. "Saw the light. What're you working on?"

There was no accusation, just curiosity. She seemed serious about upholding her end of the bargain after all.

She pulled out her wooden spoon to tap it dry on the rim. "Anti-dream brew. Makes sure you don't have any dreams for a week straight, if don't right."

"Really?" Scrooge asked, intrigued.

Honestly, a week without dreams--good or bad--would be a godsend sometimes.

"Dream potions are especially easy to make. All it really does is make helpful suggestions to your mind." She moved over to a table to pull out something particularly leafy.

"I get customers who want epic love stories with film stars, old ones who want to relive fond memories, and the occasional idiot who thinks they want to predict the future."

"Personally I'd prefer a solid night's sleep without any dreams," he told her.

She glanced over at him. "I'm almost done. You can have some, if you want."

She headed back to the cauldron, dropping the leaves in and letting them dissolve.

"I'll pay you for it," Scrooge offered. "How much for the dose?"

It only seemed right given she was likely making it to sell.
