Magica was genuinely happy - not the malicious smirk of making her enemies suffer, nor the lustful glee of a good night in Scrooge's arms - no, what was on Magica's face this evening was of pure happiness. And why shouldn't she be? The one person nearest and dearest to her heart was finally coming home. The moment she'd gotten the notice - via a letter tied around a raven's leg - she ordered the most lavish celebration the coven could create for his arrival. All the best wines were to be brought up, the fattest pigs slaughtered...

The entire castle was gathered in the throne room - slaves, witches, warlocks, relatives and minions, all were to be there for the return of the second head of the coven. The moment the doors opened, the music played, and everyone else fell to their knees in worship.

Funny enough, the man in question didn't appear to give a damn about what was going on.

Sure, he was smiling, but he wasn't acknowledging anyone he walked by, no matter how loudly they called his name and praised his safe return. As far as Lord Poe De Spell was concerned, there was only one other person in the room - his dear sister.

Once Poe arrived at the base of the thrones, he put an arm to his stomach and bowed graciously. Magica in turn placed a hand on her dress for a simple, quick curtsy. "It is good to see you home safe and sound, Poe."

"It's good to be home, Magica." He raised his head. "The conquest of the southern territories was a complete success. They shan't be giving us anymore trouble."

With the formalities over with, Magica suddenly ran into Poe's arms, and he held her as tightly possible.

Hours passed as Poe and Magica caught up with one another, both in personal details and official clan business. Once that was over, it was up to Magica to share the information she saw as valuable with the rest of the coven, while Poe went back to the library.

His questions around the castle about Scrooge proved fruitless. No one had anything to say about him - or were too afraid too. Useless lot, all of them.

Honestly, it was a miracle Poe hadn't sensed the distelfink Magica had placed on Scrooge to protect him. It was the most likely reason no one wanted to discuss Scrooge for fear of the backlash.

Poe would find Scrooge sweeping up the last bits of ash from around the fireplace, preparing to go retrieve more firewood. He paused as he saw Poe enter, bowing respectfully but saying nothing. It was likely Poe wanted quiet, after all.

He was still there? Dedicated little annoyance.

Poe walked by him without acknowledging his presence... at first. he frowned as he picked at a few books, lost in thought. After choosing a fifth book, he snapped his fingers. "Come here."

Scrooge set aside his broom and walked over. He waited, wondering just what Poe was up to. Did he need him to clean those books?

Poe dropped the books into Scrooge's hands. "Follow me." He began to walk, intending to go into his room - which, to no great shock, was right next to Magica's. The interior was even the same color, and could have been easily mistaken for Magica, if not for a few subtle differences here and there.

Scrooge followed obediently, looking around Poe's room with open curiosity. It was a perfect mirror to Magica's room.

No, not quite perfect. The differences were subtle but still there.

"Set the books on the counter next to the bed." Poe snapped his finger, willing candles to light themselves. He sat down on the bed, leaning on the headboard.

Scrooge did as ordered, waiting patiently for the next orders. It wasn't likely this was all Poe wanted from him.

Would the other man threaten him again? Or maybe go for dominating him to teach him his place? Not that Scrooge needed reminders...

Poe picked up the first book, then suddenly grabbed Scrooge by the arm and yanked him down onto the bed, on top of Poe's chest. But after that, he let Scrooge go, and calmly held Scrooge close. Nothing sexual, nothing painful.

"You'll stay there until I or Magica says otherwise."

Scrooge was certainly startled by all this. The sudden yank prompted a small squeak of surprise. He'd half-expected to be pounced on.

But no. Here was Poe snuggling him like an oversized toy.

"Yes, Master," he said obediently, still quite confused but knowing that objecting would do him no good. In fact, it might do him quite some harm.

If Scrooge wasn't going to ask, then Poe didn't feel he owed any answers. So, he began to read, using his thumb to turn the page when needed. Once in a while he'd make a sound like a "hm" of thought, but otherwise the only other noises were the distant steps in the hallway or the caw of outside birds.

His free hand remained on Scrooge, occasionally stroking his head like he was a large cat instead of an actual person.

The book, if Scrooge dared to look at the cover, was in fact one about mathematics.

Scrooge knew he shouldn't look. Honestly, he did. He should just lie still and accept the...what was this? Not affection, but still soft.

Regardless, his curiosity eventually got the better of him and he looked at the cover. Mathematics. It still boggled his mind that entire books could be written about addition and subtraction.

Out of the corner of his eye, Poe could see Scrooge looking at the cover. With a click of his tongue tilted the book to the side. "You really can't help yourself, can you."

"How do you write an entire book based on sums?" Scrooge asked, voicing his thoughts aloud without thinking. Then he tensed. "Forgive me, Master."

Poe watched him... then sighed. "Curiosity killed the cat... but satisfaction brought it back. If you insist on learning, you'll do it the right way."

With that, he pulled Scrooge upward, so that he was sitting in Poe's lap, his headright under Poe's beak. He returned to the first page, holding Scrooge to his body as gently as before, and began to read out loud.

Scrooge blinked in surprise but settled in to listen, his eyes focused on the page. He could read, but Poe could read so well. Reading out loud was always difficult for Scrooge, but Poe was doing so with such ease.

He listened intently, looking over the diagrams on the page as the instructions in the paragraphs referred to them. The sort of mathematics that were in this book were extremely advanced.

Poe would make sure to look at Scrooge's eyes and face every so often as he read, seeing where Scrooge would get confused and need elaboration. When that happened, Poe would re-read the section, and then break it down into simpler terms.

It was... odd. Poe was no teacher, never had been. Nor was Magica ever a student - yes, they both learned from their elders, but Magica was more the creative type, the one who came up with her own spells and potions rather than copy the books. Poe admired her for that. But he couldn't say he disliked this. It was just... very new, to be listened to rather than straight-up obeyed.

Hours passed like this as the sun began to set. Every now and then his hand would idly play with Scrooge's tailfeathers.

Every time Poe would play with his tailfeathers, those same tailfeathers would flick about. He was fascinated by just how complex numbers could get.

He listened, enraptured. He tried to understand things on the first try, frowning in thought.

During one pause when Poe was clearly going to backtrack, Scrooge asked about something that had been read earlier, relating it back to the present topic. The topics seemed similar...but he likely was wrong.

So Scrooge really could learn. He was connecting points, not just merely nodding along. This was intriguing. Poe straightened up, commending Scrooge and admitting that, yes, the slave was correct. He'd gotten it right.

Which was rewarded with a squeeze on his rump. This sweet little face, and the will to learn more than what he'd been handed... it was a dangerous combination.

Scrooge beamed, wiggling a bit against Poe's body at the squeeze on his rump. He was pleasing Poe. Finally.

He settled back in, prepared to continue with the book if Poe decided to keep reading.

Just as Magica often deluded herself into thinking Scrooge was grateful for the cruelties she could inflict on him, Poe was also interpreting things another way. Maybe this had been Scrooge's plan all along - getting Poe's guard down to try and entice him.

He couldn't say it wasn't working.

Purring, Poe pulled Scrooge closer, rubbing Scrooge's backside. "You learn quickly. It takes much to impress me, but you've accomplished it."

Scrooge smiled at Poe. "Thank you, Master."

He wasn't entirely sure how he'd pleased Poe so much, but if learning from Poe pleased the man, then Scrooge would do all he could to learn from him. Scrooge could be quite curious, but very few magic people would ever dream to satiate that curiosity. Scrooge was a slave. Slaves were not allowed to learn certain things.

Well, it was just mathematics. No one would kill him for that.

And in the end, what could a mere slave do with that knowledge anyway? He was no threat to the coven's power. Surely Scrooge knew that - so obviously he was just buttering up Poe with this whole act.

"There really is so much I could teach you." Poe closed the book with one hand, intending to demonstrate exactly that. With another firm squeeze, he pulled Scrooge in close to kiss him.

Scrooge kissed Poe back, adjusting himself so he didn't have to strain his neck as much against the collar. Blasted thing was in the way.

"Like what, Master?" he asked softly once their lips parted.

Poe looked at him in disbelief. He really took the whole innocent act far, didn't he? That, or he was both the dumbest and smartest slave alive.

There was a moment of hesitation, but Poe did unclick the collar and let it roll off Scrooge's body. "There are things only men can understand about our fellow man." And while he did love Magica, he doubted she had much creativity when it came to the bedroom.
