 Immortality tended to get boring. Whether she was booted out of the divine halls or voluntarily left depended on who you asked. As far as Magica De Spell was concerned, the mortals deserved to be in her presence every so often to entertain her. She flitted from village to village, trying to find someone worthy of her time, but alas, her standards were very high.

Then she learned to hear the whispers, the rumors, about a clan that rose from the depths of defeat and refused to stay down. The next head was a strong, determined lad who worked to the bone every day to bring glory to the family name. Curious about such a man, Magica walked along the dirt and the stones to where the man supposedly traveled for his wares. For now, she disguised her presence, allowing herself to be ignored by all living things so she could observe without being seen.

After all, when it came down to it, she wasn't going to hit it if this McDuck wasn't a looker.

"You wish me gone. It's about the same." A huff.

[richestduck]

"You don't want to be here," he countered. "You just want me to sleep with you and then leave." He turned to lean his back against the door.

His mother had told him to be honest with Magica, to tell her the whole truth. But, oh, it was hard.

"I won't lie and say it's not tempting."

While that was nice to hear, it was still not enough for her because of one word he hadn't said.

"But." she said it for him. "But. You won't."

[richestduck]

"No. I won't," he agreed. "What we want out of that night is too different. You want one night; I want longer than that. And it's not always the mortals that suffer in those tragic stories of god and mortal couplings."

He took a steadying breath.

"I'll not force you to watch a husband, children, grandchildren, and so on wither while you live on, but I can't spend a night with you either."

Magica had her hand to the door, eyes closed. She supposed it really didn't matter how she looked, given the door between them.

"Tell me to go, and I'll go."

[richestduck]

"If you want to stay, I won't stop you," he said. He gave a wry chuckle. "Couldn't even if I tried."

After all, he was a mortal and she was...well...she was a goddess. He'd seen other sides to her (most of them annoying but every-so-often a glimmer of someone genuinely fascinating), but that barrier was one that couldn't be overlooked.

Was there ever a time where he was not frustrating?

"I am saying, if you want me gone, I will go."

[richestduck]

Scrooge closed his eyes. He opened his mouth, preparing himself to tell her to leave.

"I don't want you to leave. That's the problem."

Magica had prepared herself, ready to vanish the moment he said he wanted her gone.

So him saying otherwise was... rather surprising.

Slowly, hesitantly, she began to open the door. She didn't look like a goddess in that moment - rather, she looked more like how she'd appear as a mortal girl, shy and confused with a hint of demurely confusion.

He felt her start to open the door, moving forward to avoid falling back into the room and potentially on top of her. He looked at her, taken aback for a moment by this more humble form of beauty that she was capable of taking on.

Honestly, he liked this better than her divine appearance.

Magica didn't appear to have noticed her own change, too focused on Scrooge's answer. "Really?" She asked quietly, still surprised.

[richestduck]

"Aye. You're annoying, stubborn, and a pain in my tailfeathers, but I keep seeing glimpses of someone truly interesting beneath all that. I...I honestly want to see more of you." He paused, turning bright red. "N-not physically!"

Perhaps a day or two before, she would have teased him with that slip, and even began to undress. But now?

"... I guess I could stay." It was a low mumble, looking away.

[richestduck]

"It's up to you ultimately. I'm sure you have goddess things you're supposed to be doing. Whatever those might be."

He might be somewhat awkwardly confessing he wasn't entirely opposed to her company, but he was still unconvinced the gods actually did much.

"If they are, I don't care." Magica was well on her way back to haughtiness. "I can do what I like and where I please."

[richestduck]

"Good." Then with more confidence. "Good. Well then. I'll see you at dinner or tomorrow morning."

He then turned hastily, trying and failing to hide the blush.

Because he did, he failed to see the smile on her face. "I could have dinner."

[richestduck]

"Just don't be late. And make sure you wash up. You know Mummy's rules."

And going to hastily walk down the corridor.

Hm.

Well, now what? She wasn't going to marry him and carry his children. He wasn't going to indulge her in one night of passion. So why was she still there? She couldn't understand.

She was there for dinner - washed up and everything. As was Ludwig, but only because he literally had to be dragged there.

Matilda's face was one of affectionate exasperation as she dragged Ludwig into the dining room. She saw Magica and smiled. "Nice to see you're doing better, Magica."

Obviously, Scrooge had spread the story that Magica had needed some time to herself, not clarifying exactly why.

Magica was instantly huffy and defensive again, wanting to pretend she hadn't shown any weakness. "I'm perfectly all right, as always."

Ludwig peered up from his book. "Did something happen?"

[richestduck]

"Don't worry about it, dear," Matilda said, adding that small endearment without thinking...and realizing he likely wasn't going to notice.

Indeed, Ludwig wasn't going to - until, in passing, Magica casually smacked him upside the head, not bothering to stop walking ahead as she did so.

Ludwig knew by now he "earned" those attacks, so he blinked at Matilda, puzzled. "Are you sure?"

[richestduck]

"Aye. I'm sure. Everything's fine." Matilda gave him a little smile.

He still hadn't caught on to her little nickname for him. Oh well.

Scrooge shook his head. McDucks and god couplings were extra doomed, it seemed. "Any new sightings of Quackmore?"

Hortense snorted. "No. And if he's got even a lick of sense, he'll give up."

"He doesn't," Magica answered as she took a seat. "But if there's a few positives to be found, he won't try to force himself on you." Though knowing the strength differences know, he probably wouldn't have survived the effort. "If we're lucky, it might be a matter of him getting bored so he'll move on." After all, Hortense didn't like him.

"Quackmore was here?" Ludwig asked, still oblivious. "And no one's dead? Marvelous!"
