 Immortality tended to get boring. Whether she was booted out of the divine halls or voluntarily left depended on who you asked. As far as Magica De Spell was concerned, the mortals deserved to be in her presence every so often to entertain her. She flitted from village to village, trying to find someone worthy of her time, but alas, her standards were very high.

Then she learned to hear the whispers, the rumors, about a clan that rose from the depths of defeat and refused to stay down. The next head was a strong, determined lad who worked to the bone every day to bring glory to the family name. Curious about such a man, Magica walked along the dirt and the stones to where the man supposedly traveled for his wares. For now, she disguised her presence, allowing herself to be ignored by all living things so she could observe without being seen.

After all, when it came down to it, she wasn't going to hit it if this McDuck wasn't a looker.

Magica didn't appear to have noticed her own change, too focused on Scrooge's answer. "Really?" She asked quietly, still surprised.

[richestduck]

"Aye. You're annoying, stubborn, and a pain in my tailfeathers, but I keep seeing glimpses of someone truly interesting beneath all that. I...I honestly want to see more of you." He paused, turning bright red. "N-not physically!"

Perhaps a day or two before, she would have teased him with that slip, and even began to undress. But now?

"... I guess I could stay." It was a low mumble, looking away.

[richestduck]

"It's up to you ultimately. I'm sure you have goddess things you're supposed to be doing. Whatever those might be."

He might be somewhat awkwardly confessing he wasn't entirely opposed to her company, but he was still unconvinced the gods actually did much.

"If they are, I don't care." Magica was well on her way back to haughtiness. "I can do what I like and where I please."

[richestduck]

"Good." Then with more confidence. "Good. Well then. I'll see you at dinner or tomorrow morning."

He then turned hastily, trying and failing to hide the blush.

Because he did, he failed to see the smile on her face. "I could have dinner."

[richestduck]

"Just don't be late. And make sure you wash up. You know Mummy's rules."

And going to hastily walk down the corridor.

Hm.

Well, now what? She wasn't going to marry him and carry his children. He wasn't going to indulge her in one night of passion. So why was she still there? She couldn't understand.

She was there for dinner - washed up and everything. As was Ludwig, but only because he literally had to be dragged there.

Matilda's face was one of affectionate exasperation as she dragged Ludwig into the dining room. She saw Magica and smiled. "Nice to see you're doing better, Magica."

Obviously, Scrooge had spread the story that Magica had needed some time to herself, not clarifying exactly why.

Magica was instantly huffy and defensive again, wanting to pretend she hadn't shown any weakness. "I'm perfectly all right, as always."

Ludwig peered up from his book. "Did something happen?"

"Don't worry about it, dear," Matilda said, adding that small endearment without thinking...and realizing he likely wasn't going to notice.

Indeed, Ludwig wasn't going to - until, in passing, Magica casually smacked him upside the head, not bothering to stop walking ahead as she did so.

Ludwig knew by now he "earned" those attacks, so he blinked at Matilda, puzzled. "Are you sure?"

[richestduck]

"Aye. I'm sure. Everything's fine." Matilda gave him a little smile.

He still hadn't caught on to her little nickname for him. Oh well.

Scrooge shook his head. McDucks and god couplings were extra doomed, it seemed. "Any new sightings of Quackmore?"

Hortense snorted. "No. And if he's got even a lick of sense, he'll give up."

"He doesn't," Magica answered as she took a seat. "But if there's a few positives to be found, he won't try to force himself on you." Though knowing the strength differences know, he probably wouldn't have survived the effort. "If we're lucky, it might be a matter of him getting bored so he'll move on." After all, Hortense didn't like him.

"Quackmore was here?" Ludwig asked, still oblivious. "And no one's dead? Marvelous!"

"He's trying to court Hortense," Matilda told him.

"And failing miserably," Hortense added with a snort. "'Please bear my children'. Classy."

"He did say 'please'."

"Ah, child-bearing! What a fascinating concept!" Ludwig said, absolutely not surprising Magica. "That and courting are two areas of which I admit my area of expertise is extremely lacking."

Magica bit her tongue. To tease, or not to tease? "How shocking."

[richestduck]

"You seem to do just fine with me," Matilda said, knowing he wouldn't take the hint. She got up to help her mother in the kitchen.

"What a kind girl." Ludwig said, still not getting it. "I bet I could learn just as much from her as she could from me!"

Magica took a seat. "You are the stupidest man alive."

[richestduck]

"Quackmore," Scrooge and Hortense reminded Magica simultaneously.

[lifesa_witch]

"Hey, I know all of them better. You've only known them for a few days. I am the expert on god stupidity."

Ludwig just blinked, wondering what brought this on. "Is this proper dinner talk?"

[richestduck]

"Well, if you really want to -- mmph." Hortense glared at her brother who covered her mouth with his hand.

"I'm begging you not to say it right before we have to eat," Scrooge said. After a beat of silence, he yelped, jerking his hand away from her mouth and hastily wiping it off on a napkin as Hortense smirked.

Magica rolled her eyes at the heartwarming sibling antics. But as the other McDucks returned with the food, they'd all see this dinner was... unusually quiet, as least for the gods.

Magica was uncomfortable with all these new thoughts with her, although they weren't exactly unwelcome. Ludwig was just plain old confused, and when he wasn't given answers, how was he supposed to learn?

It took a bit of adjustment to get back into the rhythm of having a conversation without the gods actively participating in it. (How quickly the McDucks adapted to such a bizarre situation.)

The most excitement was, honestly, when both Scrooge and Hortense had an arm wrestling competition for the last of the haggis. Hortense won by virtue of kicking her brother in the shin prior to one last push.

This, at least, seemed to get a rise out of Magica. "If you indulge in cheating, Quackmore might dump you. He's a meat-head, so he believes in brawn over brains."
