[With a nod, she sets the pile down next to him before moving to unpack their rations... with the Altea-made ones including tubes of a bright green gel that tastes like spirulina and raw okra, but Allura insists it's closer to cucumber and herbs.]

We've made good progress today. We should reach the border by midday tomorrow.

[Yes, talking strategy is always good for keeping things grounded, distracting herself from grief or this dumb infatuation of hers. (Although she's been careful not to say too much, in case of scrying.)]

[ Dorian will forever (playfully) fight her about the taste of her odd green paste, but decides to skip that for tonight (unless she tries to make him eat the stuff, then there's no holding back).

After adding a bit more kindling to the fire, letting it grow to a decent size, he sits back and pulls out his mandolin, idly picking at a few strings and playing a tuneless song. ]

Hopefully. Though I've been getting the feeling that it's going to rain tomorrow, so that might slow us down a bit.

[ He definitely has no control over the weather, but it likely has a connection to the wind that he's picking up something on it. ]

[LOOK, it was designed for space travel with an emphasis on nutritional completeness and shelf life. It's like complaining about Tang. Still, they do have actual food with their rations as well, and they're both in good shape, so it's not like she needs to force feed him or anything.

Allura grimaces at the mention of ill weather. She's come to trust Dorian's forecasts by now.]

If it isn't too heavy, we might chance it anyway. The helmet visors should work well enough, and we don't have much time to spare.

[Every day they spend is another day Zarkon has to wreak havoc on Altea. At the start, this had translated to taking longer night watches so Dorian could rest more (and to stave off her own nightmares), longer rides and shorter breaks throughout the day, desperate fighting, all pushing herself to spells of weakness or even collapse (thankfully not while riding). Dorian most likely had to force Allura to take proper rests at that point.]

[ Dorian has become uncomfortably familiar with Allura pushing herself, and it reminded him a bit too much of other people he knows. So he can't help a concerned frown as he glances up at the sky, closing his eyes to take a moment to feel the winds. ]

...I'm not sure if we'll be able, honestly. [ He opens his eyes again and looks to Allura. ] Besides, the route we'll be taking is pretty tough, isn't it? I don't know if it'll be safe traveling through a storm with possibly difficult terrain while the roads are slick.

[ While it does feel like the coming storm could be heavy for sure, he might be playing it up just a bit more in order to get Allura to take it a bit easier. ]

[A few moments of silence, before she sighs.]

You're probably right. [She stares at the fire.] Maybe we can travel on foot for at least part of tomorrow? The sooner we get to the border, the better.

[The sooner her people can stop suffering, her clasped hands tightening at the thought of what Zarkon is doing to her country right now.]

[ He debates, for a moment, whether or not to point out that pushing herself to exhaustion won't really help whatever she's trying to do. But they've had this conversation before, and he knows her nerves are already frayed enough as it is.

So after a moment he nods. It's as good a compromise as they'd get. ]

All right. We can travel on foot for a while and see how heavy the storm gets.

[She looks up with a small smile.]

Thank you, Dorian. I promise I'll try not to push myself too hard. I just worry...

[ With a small smile, he nods. ] I understand, truly I do. But it'll be easier to take care of those things if you're functioning on a full tank, you know?

I know. Thank you... for helping keep it full.

[That sounded better in her head, but maybe he'll still find it sweet.]

[As she says that, though, she feels a faint tickle on the back of her hand. Then another on her nose, and a few soft taps around them.]

I think the storm is here early.

[ Blinking in surprise, he holds up his hand and catches a few raindrops. ]

I guess we better put some shelter up before it gets too bad.

[Allura nods, already unearthing the tent kit from their supplies. The weather had been warm and clear enough that they haven't really needed it yet, but it should be spacious enough for both of them, and able to keep out the rain, especially with the tarp covering.]

I'll take care of this if you want put out the fire and grab the sleeping gear.

Got it. [ He gets to his feet, taking just a moment to make sure his lute is out of the rain first before putting out the fire. Then he grabs their gear and heads back to where Allura is setting up the tent. ]

[Thankfully, the tent is also Altean-made, and very easy to set up. By the time Dorian has things set outside, Allura's giving a few more tugs to make sure the tarp is in place and opening the flap to help bring things inside.]

There... [She sighs a bit as she starts unrolling her sleeping bag.] So much for the fire. [Or a hot meal.] After all that work you put in too.

[ Dorian chuckles a little and shrugs. ] Well, it hadn't been that difficult to start the fire, honestly. [ He doesn't bother to unroll his own sleeping bag yet, though, and just takes a seat nearby. ] It would've been nice to have, though. Especially when it starts to get colder.

True. [Almost as if on cue, a harsh shiver runs through her before she starts rubbing her arms. Comes from living in a very hot kingdom.] L-Like that...

[ He glances over, and frowns a little as he notices her shivering. Thinking for a moment, he then unclips his cape and holds it out to her. ]

Here. It's not much, but it might help a little.

[Ah... well her cheeks certainly feel warmer, but now she worries about him freezing. After a second's hesitation (and MAYBE some more blushing) she takes the cape... and moves to wrap it around them both.]

Thank you. The transfer of body heat will probably help.

[See? Totally logical, practical reasons for this strategy, never mind the blush spreading to her pointy ears or the way she's keeping her gaze firmly anywhere but him.]

[ He stiffens just a bit, because that certainly wasn't what he was expecting. But he clears his throat. ]

Ah yes. That makes sense.

[ Yes, perfectly reasonable and logical and totally nothing else. ]

Good! [Whoops, a bit too hasty.] I mean... good, I'm... glad you agree. A-after all, it wouldn't do to have you freeze either.

Right. I, uh, appreciate that, thank you.

[ Freezing would certainly do him no good.

...but boy, it's somehow getting pretty warm right now, huh? ]

Of course.

[Right, see? Everything's totally normal. Complete with a totally normal throat clearing and subject change.]

We should... probably eat as well.

Right, yes. That would be a good idea.

[ Except getting the food requires...moving. ]

[Moving, right. She’ll just… lean forward a bit to grab the rations bag before sitting upright again and adjusting the cloak around her. She won’t reach for the “food goo” just yet, instead opting for a cheddar-like cheese and some ripe, juicy apples they managed to pick yesterday before offering the bag to Dorian.]

There, these should do nicely.

Thanks. [ Taking the bag, he grabs some bread along with some of the cheese. ]
