 One of the disadvantages of immortal youth was that it sometimes limited her options. If she wanted something fresh and young, she needed to be where the fresh and young people where, and gods, their music was awful. What happened to the good old days of violins and organs?

So imagine her surprise as she viewed the buffet to find one snack that looked older than most. She raised an eyebrow - he didn't seem to be in any midlife crisis. The exact opposite, in fact - like if he had any real choice, he wouldn't be here. Well... she could fix that for him.

She licked her lips, and then made her way across the room. A gorgeous beauty like her, it was like parting the ocean waves with a hand. She was by his side within seconds, sizing him up.

Nice, very nice. He even smelled delicious.

"Congratulations, you're the most miserable person here, and I think that includes the janitor."

He gave her a soft smile before he went to finish getting dressed. Well, at least there was that. Even if no one else could've cared less, she was looking forward to seeing him after work.

"I'll try to come back as soon as I can but I might be late again."

"Don't forget to take care of yourself." Though she knew he wouldn't, frustrating as it was. An all-powerful creature of the night couldn't make an old man stop to eat some toast.

"I'll do my best."

At least he'd get another muffin from the front desk, right?

"Have a good day, love."

She meant to say darling, and didn't seem to hear the slip as she closed her eyes, intending to nap.

Love. She'd called him "love".

He shouldn't be too excited. It wasn't going to last forever.

...But she'd called him "love"...

When she didn't hear footsteps and the door closing, she opened one eye. "Scrooge?" Wasn't he going to be late?

[richestduck]

"Sorry." He shook his head and cast her a fond smile over his shoulder. "I got lost in my head. I'll be off now."

Magica raised an eyebrow, wondering what that was about, but didn't care enough to truly investigate. She closed her eyes again, ready to snooze. "Be well."

[richestduck]

"I will."

With that, he headed out, grabbing another "to go" breakfast bag from the front desk. It probably tasted delicious but it might as well have been ash in his mouth.

She wanted him to take care of himself though. He was going to try for as long as she chose to stay around.

Eventually she got up to stretch, trying to find a way to kill time. Flying did the trick for a while, but eventually she decided that she might as well use this time for something that would be actually useful.

Of all things, this wound up being her purchasing and studying cookbooks.

As Scrooge entered the hotel, he was about ready to pass out. It was late, extremely so, and he almost forgot his promise of ordering something for dinner so she could eat. However, he paused at the front desk, requesting a meal be sent up to his room as quickly as possible, before heading to the elevator.

Almost back. Almost safe again...

When the door opened, Magica raised her head, placing her book aside. Judging from yesterday, he'd need a good hold and to lay down as soon as possible.

"Scrooge?"

"Aye. Tired but I'm all right." He gave her a weak smile. "I asked that dinner be brought up. And I even managed to get in a banana for lunch."

It wasn't much but it was something?

She almost rolled her eyes. One banana. How was he even alive?

She came to him and held him. "One day I fear I'll hold you and you'll break apart into pieces."

"I'm going to fix it," he told her, leaning into her embrace. "For you."

Because she cared. Even if only for a little while.

She kissed his cheek. "That would be nice to see. Now, you make yourself comfortable, all right?"

[richestduck]

"Not too comfortable," he chuckled. "I need to eat and then so do you."

[lifesa_witch]

She flicked his beak. "Then sit down and be comfortable there."

[richestduck]

He did as she ordered, sinking into a stuffed chair. He closed his eyes and murmured, "Don't let me fall asleep just yet."

"I won't." She followed him to the chair and rubbed his shoulders. "Tell me about your day."

[richestduck]

Scrooge sighed. "Largely spent sorting through files. I won't bore you with specific details. Since it's a full audit, the EU has been insisting on their own independent accountants combing through the books. There were a couple of 'violations' that weren't anything of the sort. They were planning to seize the entire EU branch of McDuck Enterprises based on imaginary infractions."

She barely understood any of it, but maybe venting it out would make him feel better. She kept rubbing, keeping her eyes open for the door and who would be there.

It might hurt his business, or cause suspicion, if his associates knew that a strange woman was in his room. "A failed plan, by the sound of things."

[richestduck]

"Aye. It's not the first time some bureaucratic stooge tried to earn points with their bosses by making things up. They expect me not to know the ins and outs of that business and just let my own accountants handle things. They forget I managed my own books for years and I still keep track of changes in financial rules."

[lifesa_witch]

"Underestimating you is tantamount to suicide." She kissed his cheek. "Absolutely ridiculous."

He leaned into the kiss, enjoying the affection and craving it. "I'm not good at keeping what's mine, but I try."
