Well. This was going to be awkward.

Magica had once more thrown herself into her magical studies in order to get revenge on Scrooge McDuck and his family - so she told herself, when the real answer was to make a desperate attempt to get over her break-up. It was impossible to really admit it, as it was essentially saying she gave up vengeance for love, and honestly, what kind of sorceress would do such a thing?! With that, she bottled up her heart, and began to explore the wide open world to find more power. There had to be some sort of spell, curse, hex, potion, what have you, to destroy what Donald had done to her and then she'd be pure Magica again, all darkness. She'd gone halfway across the world in her quest, and instead of finding a cure...

... She found the disease. She found Donald - and then wondered what she had done to make the gods so pissed off at her. (Aside from the usual stuff.) Not only that, he was alone, injured, and without some help, he was a dead man. To be fair, the worst part of her reasoned, if you did leave him like that, he'd die and then you'd be free of him. There was no logical reason to do anything about it.

There was also no logical reason to pick him up and take her to her temporary place of residence - and yet she found herself carrying him away and mentally swearing at herself with every step. For all her magical prowess, she really knew nothing about healing magic. After all, she was an evil sorceress, why would she have wasted time learning how to heal people? So she had to do it the old fashioned way, with gauze and bedrest, while flipping through ancient texts to find anything of use.

Still, she knew she had to brace herself for when he woke up. No doubt he'd accuse her of kidnapping, hostage-taking, or any number of things. (Which you could do, the worst part of her tried to reason again, use this to your advantage! but she knew she wouldn't.)

This was going to be a long, long day.

He grabbed one of her wrists, glaring up at her. "What's it matter to you? If I was nothing but your pawn, why do you care if I live or not? Why even bother helping me?"

"Why are you questioning it?" She refused to answer, trying to snatch her wrist free. "Why do you always have to have an answer? Can't you ever just shut up and accept things?"

"Why should I just accept it?" Despite his injuries, he had a pretty strong grip. "You lied to me before. So why should I trust you now?"

"Because you don't have a choice!" Magica snarled, her eyes almost glowing in their anger. "You're a mortal, I'm the magical sorceress, I'm the one in charge, not you!"

He snorted. “You may have been lying when we were dating, but you should know me better than to that. I’ve faced a lot of things that are scarier than you.”

Magica's eyelid twitched. "You've got five seconds to let me go."

He waited about four seconds before he finally released her wrist, if only to lay back more to keep his head from pounding more than it was.

Maybe aggravating her wasn’t the best idea, but it made him feel better. At least when his head wasn’t hurting so much.

Magica rubbed her wrist, and sat on the bed, looking away from him. "Why did you always have to be so stubborn." But it's a depressed mumble, acknowledging this was one of his worst, and best, traits.

He gave a snort, opening his eyes to look at her. “Must be a genetic thing.”

Because they both knew being stubborn ran in his family.

"Must be." But it wasn't said with any bitterness or fight. It rather sounded like she was tired, as if this entire day had been exhausting in one form or another.

Maybe not physically, she being a sorceress. Perhaps mentally, emotionally.

He watched her for a moment, as much as he tried not to, he felt a bit guilty for his earlier outburst. And he knew he shouldn't have, because she had admitted to using him and lying to him. She deserved to hurt as much as he did.

So why wasn't that thought making him feel any better now?

Finally, she began to stand up again, collecting some of her books.

"I'll study somewhere else. You need to get your rest."

He hesitated a moment.

"...I doubt I'll get much sleep anyway."

He won't say it out loud because, really, he shouldn't want her company. After everything she did, she should be the last person on Earth he wanted to spend any time with.

But, as much as he hated to admit it, he didn't want to be alone right now either.

Nor was she in any eager move to leave his side, despite the heated argument they just had - and she doubted it would be the last one they'd have while he stayed there.

"I don't know." She finally said, answering the damned question. "I don't know why I took you here."

He glanced at her, silent as he turned her words over in his mind. To be honest, he wasn't sure what answer he would have wanted to hear anyway.

"...I guess I should thank you for saving me, anyway," he murmured. It was almost a sarcastic comment, but he was too tired for even that at the moment.

"You're welcome." Her reply was hollow. Not bitter, but equally exhausted, her more mentally than his physically.

She could feel his eyes on her back, and she turned her head his way, unsure what to say. She'd been more unsure about a lot of things lately, thanks in no small part to him. "... We'll survive this, one way or another."

He glanced up, meeting her eyes. "You mean this..." he gestured to his bandage-wrapped body, "or this?" This time he gestured to the space between them, and all the tension and the unresolved mess that was left behind from their last encounter.

Magica quickly went on the defensive, turning her head away with a click of her tongue. "It's not like we're the first people to break up." Although their circumstances were highly unusual. "Being together like this isn't going to kill us. Hell, you survive worse things on a day to day basis."

There, maybe now that she said it, maybe she could begin to believe it.

He was silent for a long moment, just watching her. And maybe he was still tired from his injuries, but he didn't feel like pretending.

"...So why is this so hard?"

"How should I know? I've never been in a..." She couldn't finish it. Relationship? Is that how you'd define it? But it wasn't real.

"... That was the one few things I was honest about. I've never attached myself to anyone. I've taken my pleasures, but I've never been... romantically involved with them."

He watched her; that definitely made sense, given what he'd heard from Uncle Scrooge about her, and how she admitted that she had been using him before.

But still...something felt off about all of it.

"So...why was this different?"

"Because I was never trying to get someone to... enjoy my company before." It was difficult to put into words, moreso to even think about it. "It's never been part of the plan before, and I've never cared what people thought of me... as long as they feared me, that was what I wanted."

A snort, glancing over at him. "I thought all I had to do was butter you up and touch you, and you'd reveal everything. But... you... needed more effort than that."

He couldn't help a small snort, as he glanced away. "Well...I've never been too quick on the uptake."

The words were said a bit sourly. No one was more aware of his faults than he was.

"Obviously. I named myself Abby Cadabera."

Then again, how clever was her real name? Best not to think about it.

He snickered. "I just thought it was a cute name."

Though he probably shouldn't have said that out loud. Clearing his throat, he glanced away again.
