Well. This was going to be awkward.

Magica had once more thrown herself into her magical studies in order to get revenge on Scrooge McDuck and his family - so she told herself, when the real answer was to make a desperate attempt to get over her break-up. It was impossible to really admit it, as it was essentially saying she gave up vengeance for love, and honestly, what kind of sorceress would do such a thing?! With that, she bottled up her heart, and began to explore the wide open world to find more power. There had to be some sort of spell, curse, hex, potion, what have you, to destroy what Donald had done to her and then she'd be pure Magica again, all darkness. She'd gone halfway across the world in her quest, and instead of finding a cure...

... She found the disease. She found Donald - and then wondered what she had done to make the gods so pissed off at her. (Aside from the usual stuff.) Not only that, he was alone, injured, and without some help, he was a dead man. To be fair, the worst part of her reasoned, if you did leave him like that, he'd die and then you'd be free of him. There was no logical reason to do anything about it.

There was also no logical reason to pick him up and take her to her temporary place of residence - and yet she found herself carrying him away and mentally swearing at herself with every step. For all her magical prowess, she really knew nothing about healing magic. After all, she was an evil sorceress, why would she have wasted time learning how to heal people? So she had to do it the old fashioned way, with gauze and bedrest, while flipping through ancient texts to find anything of use.

Still, she knew she had to brace herself for when he woke up. No doubt he'd accuse her of kidnapping, hostage-taking, or any number of things. (Which you could do, the worst part of her tried to reason again, use this to your advantage! but she knew she wouldn't.)

This was going to be a long, long day.

"You're welcome." Her reply was hollow. Not bitter, but equally exhausted, her more mentally than his physically.

She could feel his eyes on her back, and she turned her head his way, unsure what to say. She'd been more unsure about a lot of things lately, thanks in no small part to him. "... We'll survive this, one way or another."

He glanced up, meeting her eyes. "You mean this..." he gestured to his bandage-wrapped body, "or this?" This time he gestured to the space between them, and all the tension and the unresolved mess that was left behind from their last encounter.

Magica quickly went on the defensive, turning her head away with a click of her tongue. "It's not like we're the first people to break up." Although their circumstances were highly unusual. "Being together like this isn't going to kill us. Hell, you survive worse things on a day to day basis."

There, maybe now that she said it, maybe she could begin to believe it.

He was silent for a long moment, just watching her. And maybe he was still tired from his injuries, but he didn't feel like pretending.

"...So why is this so hard?"

"How should I know? I've never been in a..." She couldn't finish it. Relationship? Is that how you'd define it? But it wasn't real.

"... That was the one few things I was honest about. I've never attached myself to anyone. I've taken my pleasures, but I've never been... romantically involved with them."

He watched her; that definitely made sense, given what he'd heard from Uncle Scrooge about her, and how she admitted that she had been using him before.

But still...something felt off about all of it.

"So...why was this different?"

"Because I was never trying to get someone to... enjoy my company before." It was difficult to put into words, moreso to even think about it. "It's never been part of the plan before, and I've never cared what people thought of me... as long as they feared me, that was what I wanted."

A snort, glancing over at him. "I thought all I had to do was butter you up and touch you, and you'd reveal everything. But... you... needed more effort than that."

He couldn't help a small snort, as he glanced away. "Well...I've never been too quick on the uptake."

The words were said a bit sourly. No one was more aware of his faults than he was.

"Obviously. I named myself Abby Cadabera."

Then again, how clever was her real name? Best not to think about it.

He snickered. "I just thought it was a cute name."

Though he probably shouldn't have said that out loud. Clearing his throat, he glanced away again.

"You really are a fool." She chuckled quietly, shaking her head. "I almost went with 'Miss Tick'."

Mystic.

That got another small laugh from him. "Would 'Miss' really have been the first name? Because even I might've been suspicious."

Maybe 'Missy', but even then.

"Oh please." She looked at him, both mocking and amused. "As long as I kept brushing my chest up against you and calling you my 'big strong man', I bet you would've even ignored 'Ima Witch'."

She was kidding. Slightly.

He laughed, though this time it was a bit more embarrassed. "Yeah...probably."

He's been known to be a bit dense.

The chuckles and laughter soon died down, and she turned her head away.

"... At least you know better now. You can find someone better."

He fell silent for a moment, but the laugh that followed lost most of its warmth.

"Knowing my luck, probably not."

Now she gave him an incredulous look. "... Are you seriously giving yourself a pity party right now?" She had enough of Scrooge doing that with his pizzas once, she wasn't going to enter round two for an even sillier reason.

"You managed to charm the world's most evil, powerful sorceress, and you think you can't get another woman interested in you?"

He snorted. "I told you before, didn't I? Women usually aren't interested in me. It would be just my luck that the one who was just happened to be my family's enemy."

"That's because you never make a move!" If she was really about to give him dating advice, she was going to kill herself.

"I'm the one who came onto you, I hit on you, I asked you out, I started everything physical!" With each accusation, she poked his chest. "You're so obsessed with your family you never try to go after a girl! And when you do, you chicken out! You always... fluff out and stammer!" Which was both adorable and frustrating.

He grabbed her finger. "You came to me because you wanted something from me, remember? The only reason you approached at all was because it was part of your evil scheme or whatever!"

Letting go of her finger, he huffed.

"And I didn't always have the boys to look after. I was a teenager once, looking for girls to date. But at least taking care of the boys gives me an excuse of not having a girlfriend. Being a teenager and getting rejected over and over? I'm not looking forward to that again."

"And you made me back off it!" Her hand slammed on the bed near his head. If they were going to rehash history, they were going to get it right.

"Do you have any idea how much I've wanted revenge against your uncle?! I was trapped in that dime for FIFTEEN YEARS, but I spent only a few months with you! And that was enough to make me reject that plan! Get a backbone, you jerk! If you can make the world's most villainous sorceress not go through with her evil scheme because you were just you, what makes you think you can't win over any plain Jane on the street?!"

"Maybe you just have bad taste! Because it just hasn't worked out with me and other girls! I've tried before, and you know what it's gotten me? Nothing."

In this back of his mind, he realized that this was a stupid thing to be arguing about. But somehow arguing was easier than the awkward tension from just moments earlier.

"I have excellent taste, you sanctimonious blowhard! It is taking herculean restraint not to make out with you right now!"

A beat passed as Magica heard what she just said, before slapping her other hand over her eyes. "... I don't suppose you're willing to ignore that."

He sucked in a breath, starting at her for a long, hard moment.

Then, with some monumental effort, he slowly started to sit up.

Apparently he wasn't going to forget that. Magica's cheeks burned hot, and she turned away, sitting up straight, clearly embarrassed.

"What are you getting up for?"
