Fairytale AU - Mickey & Minnie

No one had ever seen the royal family, not unless they were super important, super rich, or some combination of the two. Minnie was neither - when it came to the social ladder, she wasn't just the bottom rung, she was probably below the ground holding it up. But she never complained - she was content with her life, and didn't crave anything more... except maybe a nice boy to spend it with, but beggars can't be choosers. Nice boys were hard to find nowadays. Most in the village were rough with roaming eyes, and Minnie couldn't see herself spending time with any of them.

Besides, there were bigger things to worry about these days. Word was that outside the kingdom, dragons had been spotted! What if they invaded the kingdom? Then again, no one in the village had ever seen a dragon... or faeries, or sprites, or nymphs, or anything else magical. So when Minnie's cat had run off into the woods, she didn't fear any of these things, trying to find her little baby before it got away too far.

"Figaro!" She called out, trying to find her beloved kitty-cat. "Figaro, you naughty boy, where are you?"

The good news is that she found her cat.

The bad news is that she also found the dragon. A scream of fear echoed throughout the forest...

"But you're my guest!" Minnie turned back around, insistent. "It would be rude of me not to at least get you a cup of tea! Especially when I have such an important person in my house!"

She put a hand to her heart, letting her imagination run away with her. "Imagine if the royal family found out I was 'rude' to one of their knights... why, they might toss me in the dungeon!"

Rubs the back of his neck shyly at that. Then shook his head, wincing at the royal family part. But he gave a warm smile, "I'm sure they wouldn't mind, let me help out at least. I don't mind trying my hand at the kitchen."

And he can cook? Sheesh, was he trying to be the perfect man for Minnie?

"Well... I guess it would be rude to say no." She couldn't help but giggle, charmed by his politeness. "Help yourself!"

Mickey smiled as came over to her side. Chuckling in delight, as he began to open the cabinet. "Sure thing! Let's see, is the tea is in here?"

"A-huh!" Minnie nodded, pointing it out. This was nice... she never had any real company ever since her parents passed away. "Do they teach tea-making in knight training?" She teased.

Looks over curiously but gave a smile with a nod as he took down one of the containers of tea, "Everyone within the castle walls must learn etiquette. It's tradition, especially tea."

Minnie stared - she'd only been joking, but even knights had to learn etiquette? Wow! "So you've actually been inside the castle!" Minnie clasped her hands together. "What's it like? What are the royals like?"

Mickey gave a nod. "Oh, yeah! Most all the of the castle staff has to, well, I mean almost all. The uh... Well Royalty knows some of the more things, but I-I picked up on them too. And..."

Shrugs as he frowns a bit on the mention how the royals were like, "I guess they're ok..."

Minnie tilted her head, curious about his odd reaction. "It sounds like you're not a big fan of them."

Gives a sigh, "It's... Not as a good of a life as it seems that's all..."

[princesswhatshername]

"Really?" Minnie frowned, and looked at her empty cabinet. "I've always wished I could be a royal. Never going hungry, going to fancy balls, wearing nice dresses without any holes..."

[kingdomkeyd]

Mickey looked to the side, "Not being let out by yourself, always being told what to do, and how to act.."

[princesswhatshername]

Minnie glanced over, curious about his sad stone. "...For someone who doesn't think too highly about the royals, it sounds like you care about them."

[kingdomkeyd]

Gives a warm smile, "Well... It's hard not to..." Looks around to Minnie, "I always kinda cared about everyone I guess."

[princesswhatshername]

Minnie began to smile again, the odd, curious feelings put aside for now. "No wonder you make such an excellent knight! We're all lucky to have you."

[kingdomkeyd]

Blushes a little, now Mickey is starting to feel bad for lying to her, "Y-Yeah... It's no big deal though r-really."

[princesswhatshername]

"We should always be grateful for all the kind people in the world! Being kind is a choice." Like lying! She hums a merry tune as they take out a kettle and cups for the tea.

Internal screaming as Mickey looked down in guilt. You moron, look what you've done now. You really like her, you should tell her the truth. It's not fair to her is it? She might hate you but you have to do it, Mickey gave a little breath, "Actually... Minnie... There's something I-I got to tell you..."

[princesswhatshername]

"Oh?" Minnie wasn't suspecting a thing, gently poking the wood in the stove to get the fire burning, so they could boil water for the tea. "What is it?"

Mickey took a breath as he looked down gently reaching for his coat, knowing he probably will get thrown out for this. Lying to her like this, "I'm... I'm not really a knight," and as he revealed the emblem symbol on his chest shirt as he removed the vest he frowned, "I'm... actually the prince... I'm sorry for lying to you Minnie, that wasn't right. I was just scared of how you might have reacted, too used to others looking at my status rather than just who I am."

There, the kettle was full of water and on the stove, the water was beginning to boil, now they just...

"... Huh?"

Minnie turned around to blink at him, and that's when she saw the emblem. Even a poor commoner like her knew what the value of that symbol was, and the sight of it, plus her words, shocked her so much that she dropped her cup. It shattered on the floor, startling Figaro with a scared "meow".

Hold up a hand as Mickey looked on in worry, "I-I'm still me though Minnie-Oh y-your cup..."

Minnie hadn't even noticed the shattered cup. She was still too shocked by the fact that THE ROYAL PRINCE WAS IN HER HOUSE?!

"I... I... I'm not wearing the right outfit!" And suddenly she fled into her bedroom.

"O-Outfit-Wha-How-Wha-Why does-?" Mickey stood there in confusion then blurted out as he realized she might want to get more dressed up or something,"Y-You don't have to do that-!"

No response just yet, except for her slamming the door to her bedroom. After several minutes of trying to find what looked best, she finally dared to poke her head out.

"... Are you really from the royal family?" Why would someone from the castle be outside of the kingdom, saving maidens from dragons?
