So are we still trying? / Or simply surviving? (magica x scrooge x poe)
Their clothes still smelled like ash. Both children had wanted to bathe - if they understood what irony was, they would have noted on how they used to hate taking them before - to great rid of it, but Poe insisted they had to keep moving. Even though their feet ached and their stomachs growled and they were cold, they had to keep moving. Who knew when the Bad People would catch up to them? It had been days (they assumed) but they couldn't be sure.
But when Magica whined she really needed to stop, Poe finally relented. But only for a little while.
Magica sat under a tree, hugging her knees, while Poe kept watch. He was convinced, any second now, some hideous thing would pop out and try to eat them whole. Well, let them try. He'd protect his sister. His magic wasn't strong, but it was something. He'd die before he let his last living family come to harm.
Magica rubbed her eyes. When was the last time she slept? She couldn't be sure. And she was so hungry. How long would they have to live like this?

A young boy (Scroogey?) exited the rustling bush, looking back over his shoulder. "Okay, Mummy!"
He turned his head and jumped as he saw the two strange ducklings. He then raised a hand. "Hello."

Magica glanced at her brother, than the other boy. She couldn't really perceive him as a threat.

Another rustling in the bushes before Downy entered the scene. "There you are, me bairn." She then looked up in surprise. "Oh my. Where did you two come from?"

As for Magica, even though this woman barely looked strong enough to swat a fly, she was still an Adult, and yes, Adults were to be feared. She cowered, hands on her head, as if expecting pain and punishment any second.

Scrooge narrowed his eyes at the other little boy, scowling. "Take that back!"
"Scroogey!"
"Mummy wouldn't hurt anybody! Take it back!"

But Magica couldn't abandon her brother. Pathetically, she began to cry, rubbing her hands against her eyes.

"Scroogey!" Downy said sharply. "Apologize right now!"
"But, Mummy! He said -- "
"Apologize!"
"..." Scrooge looked down at the ground but mumbled, "I'm sorry."
Downy then gave a soft smile towards the two. "It's all right, dears. I promise we won't hurt you."

Magica sniffled, hiccuping a bit as tears continued to flow. "Our... our... parents are... gone."
no subject
Scrooge felt incredibly bad as he heard that. He repeated, this time with less sulk, "I'm sorry."
"Scroogey, I want you to give this to them." She gave a little smile to the duo as she handed over the split loaf. "I won't go over there as long as you don't want me to."
Scrooge slowly made his way over, holding out the bread to them so they could take it.

But Magica was far too hungry to consider any plots. Her eyes widened at the first piece of real food she'd seen in days, before suddenly jumping to her feet and dashing forward to grab it. She ignored Poe crying out her name, she was sooo hungry! She ripped into it like a wild animal, desperate to get something in her stomach.
Poe tried to protest again - but his growling stomach interrupted him. And it did look good. He reluctantly walked over, and as Magica saw him approached, she slowed down her savagery to rip off equal pieces and hand them over for Poe to eat.

Downy smiled, pleased with her son. Still, she was worried about the children. If they were that hungry...
"My name is Downy. This is my son Scrooge. What're your names?"
no subject
"De Spell." He corrected his twin, talking with his mouth full. "Magica and Poe De Spell."

"And we can't stay here either." Poe tried to grab his sister's hand so they could go. As far as he was concerned, these strangers could still be Bad People.
no subject
Downy gave a concerned frown. That likely meant that their parents had been attacked...

"But I'm tired!" Magica whined, pulling back, hugging the rest of her loaf like it was a prized possession. "And my feet hurt! We've been walking forever!" At this rate, she was likely going to start crying again.

Magica didn't care if it was a lie, she wasn't sure how much farther she could run away. She looked at her brother, then walked up to Downy, lightly tugging her dress - silently saying she'd come along.
no subject
Downy looked at Magica. She smiled and patted the little girl on the head. "We'd be happy to have you." She then looked to Poe. "We'd be glad to have you, too."

Poe grumbled - he never could deny his sister anything. With a huff, he came over and took Magica's hand again, but didn't lead her away. Understanding him, Magica smiled a little and nodded at Downy - they were good to go.

Scrooge came over and picked up the basket for his mother just in case. He smiled at the twins. "It's not that far! Promise! It's really big with lots of rooms and there's these big eagles roosting in the rafters!"

Poe narrowed his eyes, not liking how this boy was stealing his sister's attention. He pouted, walking with them and mumbling under his breath.
