Magica was genuinely happy - not the malicious smirk of making her enemies suffer, nor the lustful glee of a good night in Scrooge's arms - no, what was on Magica's face this evening was of pure happiness. And why shouldn't she be? The one person nearest and dearest to her heart was finally coming home. The moment she'd gotten the notice - via a letter tied around a raven's leg - she ordered the most lavish celebration the coven could create for his arrival. All the best wines were to be brought up, the fattest pigs slaughtered...

The entire castle was gathered in the throne room - slaves, witches, warlocks, relatives and minions, all were to be there for the return of the second head of the coven. The moment the doors opened, the music played, and everyone else fell to their knees in worship.

Funny enough, the man in question didn't appear to give a damn about what was going on.

Sure, he was smiling, but he wasn't acknowledging anyone he walked by, no matter how loudly they called his name and praised his safe return. As far as Lord Poe De Spell was concerned, there was only one other person in the room - his dear sister.

Once Poe arrived at the base of the thrones, he put an arm to his stomach and bowed graciously. Magica in turn placed a hand on her dress for a simple, quick curtsy. "It is good to see you home safe and sound, Poe."

"It's good to be home, Magica." He raised his head. "The conquest of the southern territories was a complete success. They shan't be giving us anymore trouble."

With the formalities over with, Magica suddenly ran into Poe's arms, and he held her as tightly possible.

"Yes, Master," Scrooge said, nodding his head in agreement. It wasn't entirely because he was supposed to agree. Magica could be quite cute...when she wanted to be.

At least Scrooge knew that much. "She also told me about your inquiries for the distelfink... and she apologized to me." Again, this was monumental.

"I suppose I have you to thank for that."

"I was worried when you reacted badly to the distelfink, Master," Scrooge said bluntly. "And...I thought she was being unfair to you." He rubbed at his now-healed arm. "I'm a slave, and I know that my pleasure doesn't matter to my master or mistress if I'm called into their bed. My previous mistress would have me pleasure her and then leave immediately, so I had to take care of myself before going back to my chores. You didn't do anything wrong."

"I think we both know the score by now," Poe pointed out. "Regardless of what a slave is supposed to mean towards their master, Magica clearly sees you as above and beyond that. I can't claim to understand it, but it's what makes her happy, so I won't meddle with it."

At least beyond seeing if the slave was a true spy or not. He picked up the book again, this one about the stars and their meanings.

Scrooge looked with interest at the book. Why write about stars? They were just lights in the sky, and not even bright ones.

Of course such a look was noticeable. Was Scrooge starved for knowledge in any form?

"I take it you'd like some lessons, now."

"I would, Master," Scrooge began, "but I need to finish my chores first." He bowed deeply. "I'm sorry."

"Fair enough." He waved away. "I'll be here for most of the day. I'll keep the book out, if you can make time for it."

"Thank you, Master." Scrooge bowed.

He then left. He really hoped he could find enough time.

He touched his arm again. He knew it likely hadn't been an accident, but he could live with this. Just in case, he re-wrapped his arm. He didn't want the other slaves to see he'd been healed and get angry about the special treatment.

Poe read in his library, and finished his research rather quickly.

... Yet. He waited for Scrooge. For all the sexual mishaps and the "fight" with his sister after, he did enjoy teaching Scrooge. What an odd little thought.

It took a few hours, but Scrooge did come back to the library. He didn't have any work in the library to do that day, but he'd worked hard and quickly to have a little time to have a lesson. He'd even cleaned up as best he could in a wash basin so he would be a bit more presentable to Poe.

"Hello, Master," he said. He started unwinding the bandage on his arm. "If you have time to teach me, I would be very happy to learn."

Poe certainly hadn't been waiting for him, don't get any silly ideas, and he also didn't try to look for things Scrooge would be interested in, of course not.

He straightened up on the love seat, and waved Scrooge over. "Then let's get to it. If the mathematics were too difficult for you yesterday, I suppose I could try something else."

Scrooge sat down beside him, sliding in close to better see the book.

"It was difficult, Master," Scrooge admitted, "but I would like to learn if you have the patience to teach me."

He'd been repeating what Poe had taught him as he'd gone about his mindless chores. It was how he'd taught himself reading and arithmetic after all.

Poe would have preferred Scrooge on his lap, but he didn't want to show any "weakness". Although when he picked up the book, he did slide his arm around Scrooge's shoulders to bring him in closer.

"Very well. I think we finished around division yesterday..."

Scrooge nodded before focusing on the page. Honestly, the way Poe broke things down made a lot of sense in his head. Particularly since he wasn't supposed to know these things.

Much like the day before, time passed quickly as the lesson progressed. Every so often, Poe would stroke Scrooge's head, but not press for anything more.

Unfortunately, much like the day before, Poe was dangerously close to skipping a meal.

This time, Scrooge caught it in time.

"I need to go fetch your dinner, Master. Thank you for the lesson." He smiled. "I never knew numbers could do all that."

Poe blinked, startled. He glanced at the window - had it really been that long?

He clicked his tongue, but closed the book. "And Magica would have gotten on my nerves about me skipping, no doubt..." Scrooge did good, so Poe supposed he earned some praise.

Poe scritched Scrooge under the chin like he was a cat. "Numbers can only do so much. Our minds take us the rest of the way."

Scrooge hummed with pleasure at the attention. Poe was likely right, but Scrooge could see some cases how it might work outside of theory.

Once the scritching was done, he bowed and headed for the kitchen, re-wrapping his arm.

After dinner, he planned to do some interrogating of the kitchen servants, and find out what really occurred. Could something really have happened to Scrooge and bypass the distelfink? Or was he actually that clumsy?

He stood up, and began to return the books to their proper place. Magica would've used her magic to pop them where they belonged, but Poe tended to be more practical and less wasteful.

The other slaves had been testing the boundaries of what they could get away with to retaliate against Scrooge. A McDuck having such protection was obscene. He was the lowest of the low. Why would Shadow Queen Magica waste her time and powers on him?

It took a bit of doing, of course, but if a scenario had the probability of causing injury to Scrooge by accident, the distelfink wouldn't lash out at the perpetrator. The burn from that morning had come from someone hurrying about the kitchen, forgetting to warn Scrooge that something hot passing behind him. When Scrooge had turned around, there'd been some shuffling from both parties and a splash of boiling hot soup had landed on his arm. The distelfink had ensured the burn wasn't worse but didn't strike back at the person who'd made the mistake.

It was... troubling. If Poe made a bigger stink out of this, then the ire around Scrooge would grow only worse. Not to mention there was no actual proof of any wrongdoing. There was no real way to offer him protection without making things worse.

... Except, of course, by fear.

It was already known that Scrooge was favored by the Shadow Queen, and maybe they had suspected Poe's return would diminish that. But what if the Shadow King also favored him? Scrooge's enemies would have to know retaliating was hopeless.

So in the end, Scrooge spending the night with Poe was really for his own good. He'd have dessert sent to his room, and take things from there.

Scrooge delivered Magica's dinner before heading to Poe's room with the dessert he'd requested. It looked good, honestly. However, he dare not try to sneak a taste. He knew better.

"Enter."

Poe sat up in bed, dressed in a thin night shirt. Seducing a slave was sort of ridiculous - they would sleep with their owners regardless. Still, the Spells had egos that needed to be fed as often as their stomachs.

"Come here."

Scrooge walked over, still carrying the dessert. Poe was just as handsome a man as Magica was a beautiful woman. He supposed he shouldn't have been surprised.

"Is there anything else you might need, Master?"
