"I think they're in here!" came Pidge's voice...]

[He always did... is what she WOULD have said if a certain Green Paladin's voice hadn't cut through the haze.]

[Sorry, Keith, time to jump away a step or two, even if the two of them weren't doing anything racy.]

[Keith wasn't even upset as he turned back to the door in mild alarm as Allura jumped back from him. The door swung open, showing their rather guilty expressions to two curious Paladins...

"Oh-ho..." Pidge grinned a little, and Hunk outright blushed.

"I think we interrupted..." the Yellow Paladin mumbled.]

What? No! It's nothing!

[Keith felt his face getting suddenly hot.

"Just wanted to let you know that dessert was out," Pidge chimed in, her grin getting wider at Keith's reaction.]

[Maybe if Allura were a touch more indignant, have rebutted that yes, they were interrupting, and it wasn't NOTHING, but honestly? She was WAY too mortified to do anything more than stammer and turn brick red and try in vain to cover her face with one hand. Rebooting Princess.exe, please wait...]

[Allura's reaction really didn't help Pidge's and caused Hunk even more distress. He took Pidge by the shoulders, apologizing for the interruption as he managed to maneuver their little gremlin of a friend back out of the room.

He even closed the door again.

Keith coughed, then took a couple of deep breaths as he rubbed the back of his neck. His face was probably bright red right about now.]

[The second the door was closed again, Allura let out a slow, mortified groan and buried her face in Keith's shoulder.]

Ancients...! We are never going to hear the end of that, are we?

[Keith groaned with her and shook his head, his hand reaching back and seeking hers.]

Probably not. I don't know why I panicked like that. It's not like we're not allowed or something.

[He huffed a little, almost pouting.]

We're probably going to have to tell them at some point...

[Well, yeah... they would, but... still. It would have been better to tell them on their own terms.]

[A soft sigh as she lifted her head.]

You're right, on both fronts. [Still, it was an emotionally intimate moment if nothing else, and Allura still liked keeping those private. But anyway...] Are there any customs for declaring an engagement, or... do we just say so?

Mm... a little bit of both? It really depends on how formal we want to be about it. Some people mail out cards, I think. I used to see announcements in newspapers when I was a kid. [He had usually skimmed past those parts to get to the comics and the puzzles.]

Some people have parties where they invite a bunch of people to a fancy dinner night kind of thing, and then announce it there.

And, like I said earlier... there's usually a ring. But we don't have one. Or two... since sometimes a couple will exchange rings instead of just the one doing the asking giving the other one on their own.

I mean, that's Earth. I have no idea about anything that they'd do on Daibazaal or Altea.

[Keith was still learning about the other half of his heritage.]

[A nod as she took this all in.]

Interesting... I can't really speak for Daibazaal's customs... [Because even with Altea and Daibazaal's deep, complex, fraying ties, Allura had never expected to marry anyone from there, didn't even visit the planet that frequently to meet anyone she would consider marrying.] But on Altea, engagements usually didn't require gifts or other material exchanges. If it was us... we'd probably set aside an occasion to tell our families, and then they would handle the announcements. [A soft quirk to her smile.] My family more so, considering this would be a royal wedding.

[Keith considered that for a moment, the word 'royal' going unnoticed for the time being.]

Soooo... we could have an engagement party and then make Coran tell everyone?

[Keith smirked a little, kind of teasing. Still, though, the idea of having Coran, or Krolia, or Shiro be the ones to make the big speech at an engagement party was honestly fine by him.]

I guess I could ask Mom what she thinks, too.

That's true.

[But then something dawned on her...]

Hm... Actually... most of our friends and family are in one place at the moment. [A faint smirk crossed her lips.] Would it be appropriate to announce an engagement in the middle of a Christmas party?

[Of course if Keith preferred to wait, that was fine too, but... might as well keep seizing the moment.]

[Keith blinked.]

Well, yeah... It's not exactly... inappropriate.

[He pursed his lips a little in thought.]

I mean... we could? If you wanted to...

[He shrugged. Honestly, he didn't mind, either way. It would be fun to keep it secret, but also, she had a point. Everyone was here. Why not, right?]

[The thought slowly bloomed in her chest like light, and her own smile glowed as she nodded and lifted Keith's hand to her lips.]

I think I do... if you want to as well, of course.

[He nodded.]

Okay.

[This way, they wouldn't risk anyone getting upset over one person finding out before another. It was probably easier. He took a deep breath, squeezing her hand slightly.]

Let's go, then. Otherwise, they might come looking for us again...

[She squeezed his hand back, the prospect of what they were about to do making her just a bit giddy.]

After you.

[The two made their way back to the rest of the party, gathered in the kitchen and dining room in order to grab slices of cake and pie. Pidge in particular was smirking at them again while Hunk couldn't quite look them in the eye at all.]

[Still, despite the smirky grin from Pidge and Hunk's clear embarrassment, Keith still held Allura's hand as they entered. It wasn't a secret from the team that they were dating, that was for sure. They had snuck around a bit early on, but Keith's constant visits back to the Castle from the Blade of Marmora to "plan things with Allura" had kind of started to give it away after a while.

He cleared his throat a bit, his face turning just a bit pink as the rest of the guests turned to take notice.]

Uuuhhh... [Sometimes, it was harder to speak in front of this crowd than a crowd of strangers, but Keith took a breath.] Allura and I have an announcement we'd like to make.

"You don't have to tell us all what you guys were doing in the den, you know..." [Pidge snickered a bit.] "Seven minutes in heaven was more like almost twenty."

[That just got Keith to turn even darker red, and Hunk nudged her.]

"You're not helping, Pidge..."

[No, no it did not help. Allura couldn't help but flush and clear her throat, grateful to Hunk for reining Pidge in at least.]

A-as Keith was saying... [At least being a princess gave her training to recover quickly from the embarrassment.] We'd like to inform you all that... [Another blush, this time a smiling one.] Keith and I are now betrothed.

[There were quite a few shouts of "what?!", with Lance's being one of the loudest, but there were smiles... and after that last sentence, Allura really only had eyes for Keith.]

[The reactions caused Keith to respond with a nervous little chuckle, and his grip on Allura's hand tightened just a smidge, but he smiled.]

Yeah. [He looked back at her, meeting her eyes, and drawing that support.] We just decided. [It helped. He was steadier, and looked back at the group with a solid smile now.] You're all the first to know.

[So, for the next several moments, there were lots of hugs and congratulations to be had from everyone. Keith didn't mind so much. These were people who were important to him, and probably one of the few crowded parties he could handle for a long time without getting worn out. Allura, Shiro, his mom, his teammates, Coran, even the Holts and Romelle... he drew strength from them, so having this level of attention wasn't too heavy like some of the celebrations at the Garrison had been.

The biggest hugs came from his mom, Shiro, and Coran as they welcomed the joining of families. Coran did want to have a "talk" with Keith, but they'd managed to waylay that for another time. Keith was kind of hoping indefinitely...

And then, it was time to celebrate more than just Christmas and peace, but a new stage in his relationship with Allura as well. The only one who might be a little sour was Lance, but he was still happy for them. Keith made a mental note to go talk to the other Paladin alone later. He didn't want hard feelings when they'd finally started to get closer and lose the rivalry thing, after all.]

[Allura would have her own chat with Lance too. They'd spoken while stranded on that asteroid of how she couldn't return his feelings, and he understood, but she wanted to reinforce like she had back then that his friendship was absolutely invaluable, that he was almost like a brother to her. She would be happy to have him stand at her side as her family when the day came.

But for now, Allura was more than happy to be swept up in the embraces and well wishes, squeezing everyone tightly and even laughing a bit as Hunk swept them up into a teary bear hug. Krolia, meanwhile, was much more casual about suggesting a talk of her own with Allura, but with a smirk that still made the princess a bit nervous. Although she dreaded Shiro's even more impish smirk much more than Krolia's somehow. In-laws...]

[Dessert was even happier than expected with the good news, and the celebratory vibe of the family party had essentially doubled. Shiro, of course, had to embarrass Keith with a toast like a dutiful big brother. It came with an appropriate level of nostalgia in the form of one of those "I remember when..." stories to leave Keith's neck turning bright red (Yes, Keith stole Shiro's truck that first day they'd met), but it was all in good fun.

As the party began to slow down, it was time for everyone to head back to where they were each spending the night. There were too many of them to all stay at the Holts' home, but most of them were close by. So, of course, there were the last "Merry Christmas" and "Congrats!" as each headed out for the night. Keith got extra hugs from Shiro and Krolia for the news as they parted.

He glanced over at Allura then, taking her hand.]

Ready?

[Oh, that story definitely got a snort or two out of Allura, but it also twinged at her heart. Knowing that Keith was so young, so alone and filled with pain and anger, even seeing how he'd grown past it during their time together, it was never easy to imagine. She couldn't help but squeeze his hand during the toast. ... But of course Coran was there to lighten the mood again by blubbering over his little girl, and throw in his embarrassing story of the princess first learning how to fly the Castle of Lions. (Still, his admiring how much she had grown, and even how much good Keith's love and support had done for her had made her eyes water just a touch.)

But yes, soon the party came to an end, and she gave him a soft smile and nod as she squeezed his hand.]

Ready, love. [Allura turned to thank the Holts for hosting the party tonight... and for letting them commandeer dessert for their announcement.]

[The Holts were, of course, thrilled to play host to the surprise, Pidge picking on her 'big bro' and Matt picking on 'Shiro's shadow'. Colleen and Sam wished them both well and goodnight as they headed back to their vehicle.

With it being cold, even if there was no snow, Keith had gotten his hands on a normal truck instead of his speeder and they were using that for evening. The speeder was awesome, but could get uncomfortable in the cold, so no point in ruining a perfectly good night by freezing their butts off on the ride back to their hotel. Once they were on the road, he put his hand out to take hers for the ride. He gave it a light squeeze and rubbed his thumb over the back of her knuckles.]

I don't know if I can sleep tonight. [He was actually feeling energized. Usually, for him, it was the opposite after a large gathering, but this was different. He was kind of floating on their decision and sharing the news with everyone.]

[Allura chuckled quietly at the teasing, not that she was immune to ribs from Pidge about making out in the living room. (At least Matt was mercifully respectful towards her.) And Keith's foresight was very much appreciated as they walked back to the car, and Keith's hand in hers certainly helped her feel warm.]

I know the feeling. [She truly did, with the way her heart raced and sang like it was a sun burning and filling her chest with light. She lifted his hand to press a quick, grinning kiss to it.] This night has been incredible, Keith.

[He stole a quick glance at her and smiled, giving her hand a light squeeze.]

It really has been. [He couldn't agree more, really. The idea of what they had just done, what they had just promised to one another, it was exhilarating, and Keith felt light... like he could just float off the ground. It was amazing, really.] I'm either going to be awake all night, or just crash hard and sleep like a rock until morning. I'm not sure which, yet. But I'm thinking I'll be awake for quite a while. [He laughed a little.]
