[Now bending down on one knee, Soleil took hold of Ryder's hand as she looked up toward him.]

By all accounts, Ryder should be ecstatic. He should say yes in a heartbeat and scoop her up in his arms and spin her around. His heart wanted so badly to say yes.

But in that moment, Ryder freezes. His breath turns ice cold in his chest as he feels his world shatter. He struggles to breathe at all, for that matter. He feels like his entire body is being run through with electricity as the adrenaline of pure panic pumps through his veins.

The woman he loves is asking him to marry her. To commit himself to her in full, for all eternity. He blinks his wide, glassy eyes and for a brief moment he swears he sees not Soleil before him, but another. One with blonde braids and the bluest eyes he ever knew. It was her hand he grasped, eagerly, urgently.

"Grace...let's get out of this town. Together. Run away with me. We can be married away from all this!"

He shivers as if recalling the icy rain the night they tried. Laughter, the drawing of blades.

He blinks again, Soleil's image now covered in blood. Ryder yanks his hand back, falling backwards from the rock and crawling back until he bumps an obstacle behind him, shaking his head and curling into a fetal position.]

[His answer is no longer related to her question.]

[Soleil started to notice the expression turn to horror. As she sat up in both confusion and then hurt. Did... Did he say no? Oh no-He's reacting really bad too.

Already tears welling up in her eyes.]

I-I'm sorry I didn't mean to I-!

[As if sensing her distress, Ryder withdrew even further, clutching his head.]

I can't - she was my world and - I killed her. It's all my fault. I can't...not again...forgive me, Grace...

[He's...not talking to her, is he.]

[Wait... Grace? That's not... Soleil bent back down over as she tried to call out to him.]

R-Ryder! Wait-!

[His first instinct as she reaches out is to push her away, but the attempt turns into a desperate cling as he freezes, desperately clutching at her sleeves. His eyes are flooding with tears as his breath is rapid and shallow.]

I killed her. We were going to be married. They tried to stop us, and I-I killed her.

[Soleil stayed down with him as she held him as best as she could.]

Ryder-Ryder it's no longer that time, we're here now! It wasn't your fault please...

[His whole body shakes as he clutched her, going quiet but still breathing rapidly. He doesn't respond to her but something in his grip implies a desperate climb back to reality he's making in his head. Keep talking, Soleil, guide him back; a plea he can't verbalize.]

But as she continued to reach out to him, his words struggled on his lips to respond, starting to become aware that she was comforting him.]
