It's just a little crush / Not like I faint every time we touch (violet x huey)

Duckberg library really had its fair share of nerds today. When Violet was told the book she requested was already checked out by someone else, she made a beeline in their direction - only to be rather surprised to see another famous duckling. My, her luck was in great form lately - although luck was still one of the things she'd yet to believe in.

She waited calmly until she was sure there was a proper pause - him turning a page - to speak.

"Pardon me, and correct me if I'm wrong," although she rarely was, "But might you be here Hubert Duck, great-nephew to world famous adventurer to one Scrooge McDuck?"

Huey had come in to do some side research, just for his own fun for a change. There was an awful lot to learn after all, and only one lifetime to do it in. He flipped the page in his latest grab, then paused when he noticed someone speaking to him.

"Yeah, that's me." He would've settled for just watching her over the edge of the book, if not for her correctly identifying him by name and position. Alright... "You can call me Huey. And you are?"

"Violet Sabrewing. I've recently become friends with Webbigail Vanderquack."

But, more to the point, she gestured to the book.

"I wanted to inquire if you planned on finishing that today, as I hoped to take it for myself. The author is quite well-versed, and I felt it would help my research."

As soon as she identified herself, his expression cleared with realization.

"Oh! Webby's new friend, the one that helped bring Lena back. Man, too bad I missed that."

As for the book...

"I should be done with this relatively soon. I'm the fastest reader in the entire county's Junior Woodchucks troops."

"That information isn't exactly helpful to my question - I happen to be the fastest reader in my local chapter of The Littlest Chickadees."

The female equivalent of Junior Woodchucks, surprise surprise.

He paused, a little put off for the moment, but recovered quickly.

"Well, I still checked it out first. You'll have to wait, unless we try to read it together."

Delivered with a scoff, as if he didn't expect her to take him up on that.

As it turned out, one thing she and Webby had in contact was lack of proper social skills.

"Acceptable."

Which resulted in her pulling up a chair, and sitting right next to him.

Huey watched her, a bit surprised, then turned the book back to the beginning.

"Alright. So, together it is then."

As if still not sure what to make of her, or this, he looked back at the book and started reading. Though he'd passed this section before, repetition is the best way to instill the knowledge, right? He didn't mind going over it again.

But as it turned out, she wasn't just bragging earlier.

"Finished. Please turn the page."

What had taken Huey to read in minutes the first time around, she'd completed in seconds.

He dutifully turned the page, giving her a look out of the corners of his eyes and then looking down again.

So she wants a race? ~~(Huey no)~~ A race is what she's gonna get.

Violet, for her part, had no idea she'd accidentally issued a challenge. She was merely stating a fact, that was all. Her entire focus was on the book.

"Finished."

Another page flipped, and he scanned through it as quickly as he could- oh no wait, skipped a paragraph, GAH have to go back and read it again!

Making matters worse, she hadn't skipped a thing.

"Finished."

He nodded and flipped a page. Okay, it's alright no information lost yet, this is still the part of the book he's been through before. C'mon Huey, you can do this.

Fascinating. This was a very good book. She was glad she found it, although her expression didn't change. It took a lot for her to really emote.

"Finished."

He looked at her every now and again out of the corners of his eyes. What a cool cucumber, she hasn't even cracked! She just stared at the book, eyes skimming every line so quick they were practically a blur-

Shaking his head a bit, he stared back down. Okay, breathe. Mistakes happen when you rush. Just keep moving forward.

As focused as she was on the book, she couldn't help but see constant movement in the corner of her eyes. Something was up, and given her new dive into the unusual, she couldn't help but be curious.

"Is something the matter?" She asked - while never taking her eyes off the page.

"No." Was that answered too fast? Probably answered too fast. "Just trying to gauge how engaged you are by the book. You know, studies show that the faster one reads, the less information that gets absorbed. Just want to make sure you're... getting all you can out of the book and all!"

"I assure you, I wouldn't be reading it if I wasn't interested. It'd be a waste of time otherwise. I've trained myself to take in as much knowledge as possible in as little time as possible, mostly by reading exercises before my scheduled bedtime."

This was followed up by, predictably, "Finished."

"That's an excellent regimen." He stared at the book, mechanically flipping the page when she said so. Was this a race...?

"I can give you a list of informational and helpful websites that include such exercises, although it's recommended to take them in small doses at a time. Wearing down your eyes with constant screen access is a rather ridiculous sacrifice in exchange for speed."

Aaaaaaand - "Finished."

"Oh, I know. I've tried to tell that to my brothers but it hasn't seemed to take any effect yet."

Another page turned.

"I always take good care of my eyes. My whole body really, a happy body is a happy life."

"Given your famous adventures with your family, I would think that would be a necessity."

Something like a smile played on her beak, but it was already gone, because "Finished."

He turned the page, chuckling softly. "Yeah, it's become something of a necessity ever since then. Great physical ability has certainly come in handy on different adventures."

"I'm equally impressed with your ability to rationally converse while reading such an informative text."

Because, surely, he was reading right along with her, eh? "Finished."

Page. Of course he was reading it with her! Actually despite what you're thinking, he really was.

"More things I've gotten to practice with my family. Particularly when perusing the Junior Woodchuck Guidebook has proven integral to whatever task or emergency is going on at the current point in time."

"Is that right? Fascinating." There came that hint of a smile again.

"While I've done my best researching your family's adventures via the internet and news networks, I must admit it doesn't hold up to actual recollection from one of the main players involved. I would enjoy hearing how the guidebook aided in such quests, if you would not mind sharing such information."

Take a guess. "Finished."

He turned the page, but wasn't looking at the book this time. "You... want to hear about...?" Huey paused, then nodded and smiled.

"Sure!" -Shoot library, bring that tone down a bit again. "I mean sure, I can tell you about using the Guidebook in adventures."

"Excellent. Once we've finished here, we can exchange contact information. I'm looking forward to hearing how you used the Guidebook's vast wealth of helpful knowledge."

Actual smile achieved! "Finished."

Huey paused, then turned the page in the book before he slid it over.

"Here. I'll check it in, and then you can check it out after that."

At last, she pulled her eyes away from the book, miracle number two achieved!

"Are you certain? I don't wish to deprive you of potentially helpful information for my own thirst for knowledge."
