 GREEK MYTH MEME

From Disney’s Hercules to Percy Jackson, from Hadestown to Lore Olympus, Greek mythology has had a huge cultural impact on the stories we tell today – so why not have a meme exploring the best and worst about them? Don’t think you have to stick to togas and chariots though – upgrade it to the modern day, flip some genders, tell the story you want!

Here are some classics to get the ball rolling:

The god of the underworld kidnapped Demeter’s daughter for a wife, and now we have seasons. Go for the original tale with some Stockholm syndrome, have Persephone willingly come on in, or maybe she can kidnap him for a good time! Don’t forget to get in some cuddle time with Cerberus.

If you’re looking for angst, don’t turn back, or else you may lose your lover like Orpheus did. It could be a literal loss, or signed a contract that can’t be broken. Explore the origins, lament the aftermath, or demand a happily ever after with a new ending.

Aphrodite’s son was going to punish a woman for being prettier than mom, but wound up falling for them instead. Are love arrows in effect, or is this meant to be and free from destiny? Psyche went on a whole adventure to get her man, but there’s no shame in skipping right to the fluff and mush.

A lonely sculptor fell in love with his most beautiful creation, and so the goddess of love granted his wish to bring her to life. Does she remind him of a lost love, or is this a twisted case of loving a shadow? Or jump ahead to the 21st century and make her a robot, an android, or even a toy!

It took ten years for the fateful hero to return to his family, which means there’s plenty to pick from when it comes to story! Facing off against the Cyclops, outwitting the sorceress Circe, sirens and soldiers and deadly seas… There’s also the choice of playing the loyal Penelope who wards off her suitors, one of whom may be her beloved in disguise!

These are only a few of the myths that you can play with, but there are plenty more out there! Bring along your favorites that you don’t see here, or make up your own story, with your own mortals and gods!

  •  Aphrodite’s engagement to Hephaestus – does she fall for the blacksmith, or prefer the war god Ares?
  • Atalanta, famous hunter, would only marry the one who could beat her in a race – do you like those odds?
  •   Don’t forget the famous monsters like Medusa and the Minotaur – enemies to fight, or do they deserve a chance at life?
  •  The Sisters of Fate can play a part, as well as the Muses – add a Satyr, Nymph, Pegasus, there’s plenty of mythological people and creatures to pick from!
  •   A gift from the gods can be a blessing or a curse, such as the tale of King Midas and the golden touch… or you can really hate your character and go straight for the curse.
  •   Hard to choose? Wildcard is always your friend!
