Growing up in an abusive household, birthdays weren't something Mikan celebrated all that often. When her nursing ability got her famous enough to attend Hope's Peak Academy, the abuse mostly stopped, since that would have brought about an investigation to the household. Even so, Mikan often didn't bother telling people when her birthday was - it'd be too much of a bother. Whenever it did come out, it was more a statement of fact than anything else. She doubted anyone would make a fuss of it either, even if they did know.

But on that day, Naegi had called and asked if he could come over. Fortunately her parents had gone out for a few hours, and she was happy to invite him. In fact, she was cheerfully oblivious about the real reason he was coming over. She just figured he was being nice. Naegi was always nice.
