quick drabble - lena and webby

It wasn't a huge shock to learn that video games were foreign in Webby. Tea Time had probably seen them as useless, and Scrooge wasn't going to shill out money for toys for a girl he barely noticed was in his house the first couple of years she was there. Thus, when Lena had offered to show Webby the ropes on a hand-held console, she rightfully expected a look of confusion on Webby's face.

What she didn't expect was how bad Webby would be at it. Lena had brought along several small cartridges, trying to decide which Webby would like best, and hilariously Webby was inept at racing, fighting, even a simple puzzle game. Webby's own logic continued to best herself, as she expected the games to adhere to real life principles. She couldn't go that fast on a street corner, she might hit someone! Punching a guy in the head that hard should knock him out for an hour! Slot B could fit in Slot A if you rammed it hard enough!

Lena was deeply amused – Webby had always seemed like a master at everything she did, so it was nice to see something the girl struggled with. “Here, let me show you.” Lena finally offered when it appeared Webby was going to break the console in two. This could be another advantage, she figured – showing off to Webby was always fun. Privately, she rather liked how Webby seemed to fawn over Lena's every accomplishment, praising her for the simplest things. This was supposed to be no different.

Except of course it was.

Because with Webby needing be so close their cheeks were brushing together was completely throwing off Lena's concentration. Because feeling Webby's breath on her neck made Lena's head spin. And, finally, with Webby declaring, “Oooh, I got it!”, and the younger girl suddenly crawling to sit in Lena's to watch from a better view made Lena forget what she was doing in the first place.

“So what you're saying is if you down that way, there's a secret passage that...Lena? … Lena, I think your dude is dying. Is he supposed to be dying?”

“Uh.” Lena, for who-knew-how-many times-long once again cursed her creator, this time in particular for not realizing a flesh body came with hormones, dammit. “Uhhh.”

“Lena? Your dude's dead.”

So he was. “I'm... I've got two extra lives, we're good.” Don't think about Webby's smell or touch or anything, just play, just play, just play - “Anyway! The secret passage is right behind the dumb-looking art thing. You just lift the panel, and it's a short-cut.”

“Neat!” Webby chirped.

Phew. Maybe everything was fine after all. Lena's mind was free and clear. “It kind of cuts the game short, I think it's a bug or a glitch. It cuts right to your guy finding the princess and waking her up.”

“How so? Smelling salts? Acupuncture? Fighting off dream demons?”

A small laugh. “C'mon, Webs, don't you know your fairy-tales? He wakes her up with a ki-”

Helloooooooo, mental image.

“... Lena? Your dude died again.”
