quick drabble - hisao and mikan

Hisao was surprised to learn that Mikan was struggling with her grades – to him, she seemed like a medical genius. But it appeared that if it didn't have to do with nursing, medicine, health, and so on, then she was clueless. It had taken several attempts for Mikan to summon the courage to ask for his help, and even then, Hisao had to guess what she was begging. Once he finally understood, through all the stammers and tears, he actually felt rather flattered. Maybe even happy.

The maybe became a definitely once he realized he had an excuse to see her room. It was, first and foremost, very “Mikan” - covered in medical supplies, cabinets of pills and needles, medical journals lining up the wall. Part of him wondered if she ever expressed interest in anything outside of her talent – books, shows, art – and quickly knew it was his own fault for never asking about it.

Hisao didn't consider himself very smart, and in fact his own conditions had made him fall behind in a few places as well. So why did she come to him? What a puzzle. But he certainly wasn't going to complain about it, and soon they made it a weekly ritual, a study session that became more comfortable as time passed. Rumors began to whisper, and Hisao ignored them, save for the times he heard Mikan's good name being tarnished.

They covered English first. The first few attempts were disastrous, until Hisao applied the lessons to their day to day conversations. Funny how easily that worked – funny how he saw her smiling more often. He found himself studying extra hard when he was alone just to stay one step ahead of her, and impress her with his knowledge.

One day, Mikan tripped – as she always did – and wound up ruining one of her books. Once Hisao managed to help her overcome the sob session, he explained he had absolutely no problem sharing his books with her. Thus, the study sessions became closer, as they now had to sit side-by-side as they read. For him, it made concentrating on the words a smidgen more difficult.

“G-o-o-d a-f-t-er-n-o-on.” Mikan tried to pronounce, slowly, surely, her lips moving delicately, her shoulder pressed up against his.

Hisao felt his entire face flush, and forgot he was supposed to reply.

“G-o-o-d a-f-t-er-n-o-on.” Mikan said again, lifting her eyes, blinking at him. “Oh. Hisao, do you have a fever?”

“No.” He replied quickly, shaking his head in an effort to get rid of any impure thoughts. “Sorry. I'm good!”

“Should we stop for the day?”

Never! “No, it's fine, really, ah... g-o-o-d e-v-e-n-i-n-g.”

Mikan smiled, and his chest felt tight – in a good way.
